I own a 99 explorer xlt with with the 4.0 sohc and and 4 speed auto. I started thinking about doing a 5 speed swap, since i wanna cut the floor for a 1354 manual t-case anyway, and the trans is startin to lose 1st gear.
Anyway, my question is about what i should get the trans from. My friends found a second gen explorer sport, theyre not sure of the year, with the 4.0 OHV in the junkyard with a 5 speed and 2 wheel drive. They didnt check on the mileage, but said it looked clean and it was turned in for cash for clunkers. Would that trans bolt to my sohc? And what needs to be done so i can bolt a t-case to it? Could i take the pedal assembly from the sport? Also, is there any factory driveshaft id be able to use for both the back and front, or at least the back? Or is custom lenghts required? And if i can use the trans and pedal assembly, what else should i grab? I figured id buy a new clutch and slave cylinder and what not instead of using old stuff.
Im still learnin my way around this truck, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That trans from the JY wont work unless you get a 4x4 tail housing for it for your t-case. I would pass on the trans in favor of finding another that is out of a 4x4. Your VSS is in the rear end on your year, and you will need a trans harness that has the long pigtail to reach the rear end or has the connector on it for the VSS lead.

Things to grab off the cash for clunker mobile:

Grab the pedal assembly, the shifter boots/floor pan mount, The engine to trans plate, starter, Slave master cylinder assembly with reservoir, flexplate w/bolts, Console, and trans harness.

Your going to need a manual ECM from the same year as yours, and possibly the same year trans harness.

Alright, ill try to get what i can from the truck before someone else does. And ill keep lookin for a trans. Does it have to come off a 4.0, or would one off a 3.0 or possibly even a 2.3 work, as long as its 4x4? And if by chance the junkyard Ex is also a 99, could i take that ECM or does it also have to come from a 4x4?

Thanks for the help.

I thought that all 99 Explorer's had a 5 speed auto. Did you read (gmanpaints) post about going manual, there is lots of help full information there, it's not and easy job.

There are 2 makes of manual transmissions installed in the Explorers/Rangers/BII,
The Mazda(M5OD-R1 & M5HD-R2), and the Mitsubishi. You do not want the Mitsubishi offered in the early 90's(3.0,2.9,2.3). 96+ is what your looking for. A 4.0 4x4 same year trans would be a perfect match for your truck if at all possible. Your going to want to stay in the 98+ range because of the electronics involved, but it is possible to use an older trans if you don't mind having a CEL. If wanted, the trans can be used with no wiring done to it at all. I wouldn't advise that, but is possible. There is also a way to use the stock auto harness, but it involves adding 33 ohm resistors, and the solenoids out of your auto trans wired up to the auto trans harness.

To be safe(easiest), The ECM should be out of a same year manual 4x4. I had to get one from half way across the country, but it was worth it. Try kbabiak ( EF vendor) Out of PA for one.

I knew it wouldn't be easy, but with the electronics involved make it more of a pain. So i guess id have my work cut out for me. Ill try to start collecting some parts from the Sport in the junkyard. Since im startin college and on a very limited budget, ill spend the money to get the truck runnin better, then a bottle of Lucas trans stop slip and cross my fingers and hope itll last til next summer. Hopefully by winter i can at least have the manual t-case in, and if i do go through with the 5 speed swap, ill swap the case over and keep the progress posted. Thanks for the help.

hey man im in nj too and i wanna do this swap at some point as well if you can find a good junkyard around limme know like you im budgeting just started college and just finished getting a new engine put in but in the near future the trans swap is something i want to do eventually. being the kinda of person i am i would save up my cash for a brand new trans from either jasper or oem from ford i got bad experiences with used parts so i try to stay away from used parts as much as possible. keep me posted on your progress
