I have a big flowmaster which usually makes it much quieter, but the problem is I have a turndown before the axle and inside the cab is too loud. I need to keep the pipe before the axle so I was wondering if anyone has done a turnout instead of turndown before the axle? Will this make it alot quieter? I would love to get a smaller louder muffler and make it louder outside and quieter inside.

A side exit in front of the axle might be slightly less loud than a turndown, but either way, the combo of the two makes for interior resonance and a short distance between the exit and the driver, which is going to make it louder inside the vehicle.

Why do you need to have it exit before the axle?

Flowmaster makes a rear pipe for their cat-back kit that uses mandrel-bent tubing, which makes it flow well and reduces the interior noise quite a bit, but keeps the exterior volume about the same.

I'm guessing he wants to keep the exhaust out of the way of the rear axle to clear the axle at full bump with long travel leaf springs.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do, if you dump it out the side, its either going to be giving up ground clearance, or blasting hot exhaust straight at your rear tire, unless you make long side exit that sticks past the outside edge of the rear tire, which would look horrible.
