With the Rancho adjustables, is it true that dial setting 1 is the softest, while 9 is the firmest?

Currently I'm running dial setting 5 on all four corners, I'm curious what preferences others may have...

I'm curious if they were a noticable improve over stock feel (espically bumps and stuff like potholes), and how hard were they to install. I would imagine you would want them slightly soft like 4.

i am aslo interested in rancho 9000's

yes that is correct. im also interested in how you like them as far as bumps and potholes. thanks

ive been checking that out for like 30 min

I've been running mine on 7. Kinda painfull to drive on a bumpy road after a big meal.

I love my RS9000s. I won't have any other shock. I like to drive my x daily, cruise the desert, rock crawl, etc. I usually have my fonts on 4 and my rears on 3 but we'll see how it works out with the SAS. Can also control as much body roll as one wishes.

I just installed them over the weekend, so I have not really tested them much yet. I am running 5 on all four corners like I said and they ride MUCH nicer than the Edelbrock IAS I had before. Hands down the Ranchos are better than the Edelbrocks in ride quality (Edelbrocks are very firm, probably equivalent to 7 or 9 with Rancho 9000s). Running at 5 the Rancho's control body roll pretty well, and the ride is superior to Edelbrock IAS on a 1st generation Explorer. ***Keep in mind it's all different for you torsion bar/control arm guys (95+). ***
All of this is strictly my experience with a 1st gen suspension and Rancho 9000's.

Potholes: pretty good, compared to what I was running (Edelbrocks). At dial 5, the truck doesn't bounce too much going thru the pothole; with Edelbrocks the truck would bounce out pretty badly (with the Edelbrocks, one time in St. Louis on Tesson Ferry Road I hit a pothole and ended up in the next lane over......)

Washboard roads: again, superior ride to the Edelbrocks. There's only so much you can do with the twin-I beam suspension as far as ride quality goes (it's a truck ride) but Rancho 9000 is a better ride than Edelbrock.

Compared to Gabriel VST/Edelbrock/Rancho 9000: The Ranchos at 5 dial setting ride comparably to the Gabriel VST, a good budget shock that I have run in the past.
The Ranchos at 7 or 9 ride more like the Edelbrocks did.

Install difficulty: Not too bad. I had to pick the hottest day of the year to do it
I used plenty of PB Blaster to soak the old nuts; etc.
The Ranchos come with shock boots and they are a pain to install on the rear shocks but it can be done.
If you have trouble compressing the shock to get it on the mounts, go to the gym. heheh. A trick is, turn the Rancho dial to 3 or 1 and the shock will be easier to push in.

I have tried the rear at 3 and it was a little mushy and soft; the rear end was squirrely on 3; but I'm still experimenting.

Specs:
88 BII 4x4
33x12.50
D35 up front
8.8 in back
6" Skyjacker lift with Custom fab.
sway bar disco's
extended front arms

RANCH 9000 9 ways

LOVE THEM

I leave the front sway bar disco'ed when I am not towing on long trips.

Only reason I retained sway bars is 19 ft boat+lifted BII = body roll, otherwise GONE

With the 9000's set on 9 you will bite your tonque off, in fact I will likely never use 9 again.

Daily driving 4-5 without sway bars if you are like me and like urban four wheeling, speed up for dips, try to lift a tire around sharp corners, and love speed bumps
With them set on 3 around town its pretty soft.

5 is for normal driving including highways and mountain roads (on a BII, Ex is a little heavier, friend likes 7)

7 is for towing and highway trips

1-2 are crazy off road, 1 is like no shock at all.
Usually I use 3.

Dont use the dust boots, they will create rust.
Make sure you look at the arrow on the 9000 so you got all4 on the same number. I had a drives side on 5 with the pass side on 3, interesting.....

Also they seem to lock into the number better if when you are turning the knob you go slightly past your number, then back to it.

Happy dampening!!!........

I really like my RS9000X's...

I run 4 up front and 3 in the rear (5 when loaded good)

I've got a TT up front and 4 door leafs + AAL + shackles in the rear, so my suspension is definately firmer than stock (thus running the Rancho's softer). (Plus I've got a Sport so the stiff springs in the back are even more noticeable)

Nate, they're just as easy to install as any other shock. Did it myself in just an hour or 2 with no special tools.
