Rancho RSX vs. RS5000

ALright,

I've gotten the decision to either the RSX or the RS5000. I plan to do some moderate off-roading, as I do now.

Which would be better for a 75% onroad, 25% off-road driver, who wants good off road performance and isn't overly concerned with a slightly harsher onroad feel?

Go with the 5000, you wont be disappointed. i LOVE em.

BTW Im prob about 95% on road and i love the ride

I would say go with RS9000, then you can change how it rides. You wouldn't think those 5 settings would make a difference, but it does.
If I know I'm going to be on a winding road like in the mountains, you turn them up so you don't get the roll.
Then four wheeling I turn them down for the flex, on for a good ride on the street.

I love the idea of the settings on the 9000s, it is just the price that gets me. So far I have a stock Explorer that I am slowly building up. I like the cab controls for the 9000s, but at about $70 a shock and $150 for the system, it is quite pricey for the stage that my Explorer is in now.

Has anyone tried the RSX shocks? Are these comaprable to the IAS shocks from Edelbrock, and thus, more tuned to onroad than offroad performance?

As for the in cab control, I suggest you not using it. I think Packrat has it in his truck and has had good luck with it, but I have one in my garage and when I was building my Explorer I was going to put it on. Then I decided not to use it so I was going to have our local 4x4 shop sell it for me and he said he didn't really want to do it. He doesn't even carry them since he doesn't think they are worth the money.
After this I did some searching and it sounds like a lot of people don't think it is worth the money.
I would use that money to buy the RS9000 and just go out and change them when you need.
Good luck with your Explorer. They are very adicting.

How do you adjust the settings accurately? I assumed you would use a simple compressor, but how do you know when you hit each of the five settings?

Since I have a lift it is easy to get to them. There is a little knob on the shock that you turn to the possition you want. They click into place so you know what place they are in. Sometimes I forget which one they are at, so I just start at 1 and go up from that. The knob turns really easy.

Go to your local shop and just check them out. They might be able to help you also with questions. I know a few people that have them on there stock vehicles so they aren't just for modified ones.
