Because they are utterly incompetent.
I did send a package with tracking number:

Dec 17 - dropped at the Newport News VA post office to go at Inwood, NY (North).
Dec 19 - arrived to Sandston VA, 54 miles North
Dec 20 - left to Norfolk VA, 34 miles South of Newport News, 84 miles South of Sandston
Dec 21 - arrived in Norfolk VA after passing second time trough Newport News (is just one way to go - InterState I64).
Dec 22 - left Norfolk VA to Sandston VA.
Dec 23 - arrived second time in Sandston VA after passing a third time trough Newport News.

Wonder where it will go next?

They are horrible in my opinion. I completely avoid shipping with them now after a few different issues with damage while shipped. I have eaten over $200 because of their carelessness. I ship things all the time and know how to safely pack them. I have had 2 tail lights crushed and a corner broken off a side view mirror. I always get the "we are sorry and here"s a $50 check" but that's never good enough. They don't refund the shipping fees and in my case both of my items were over $100.

In my area I think they are just a tool for affirmative action employment.

I am waiting to receive a package. Tracking shows it "Out For Delivery" at 3:56 am. Mailman passed by two hours ago (1PM), no package left...
Wonder where it was left.

I've shipped over 2000 packages with USPS in the last 3 years. In all that time, none have been lost. One arrived wet, and two arrived without their contents. Two were misdirected, but they did find their way to the recipient in reasonable time.

0.002% is a pretty damn good record in my book. Plus USPS is usually the least expensive shipper, and they deliver on Saturdays. Frankly, my business wouldn't exist without them.

At Christmastime, they have specific mailmen doing package delivery and others doing the mail.

Again, high efficiency...
Package came with another small truck. I guess overtime pay...

I use USPS for all my shipping. No problems.

I guess is a matter of location, location, location...
I can understand that.

My wife uses USPS for about 30% of her business shipping (candy company) and 70% UPS. She's never really had a problem with the USPS. And the USPS will never go bankrupt as they are subsidized by the federal government (your tax dollars at work) and they levy regular rate hikes on daily residential service. Besides, when you think about $.49 cents for a First Class item cross country in a few days, it's really not that bad. But I understand the frustration level goes up during the Holidays.

Ironically, Toypaseo ^ sent me at item a few weeks ago via USPS. Arrived no problem on schedule no damage.

Oh yeah... haha...

Bingo. Service varies from town to town.

Old antiquated system that's never evolved or jumped on the .com platform service.
Combine that that with idiots like our mail man and service as described above and it's clear why they are loosing the battle.

Go over seas, Germany for instance. The post office is almost non-existent. Why? Because technically, it almost not needed. The only people who really use the service is the older generation. The technology age has no need for a physical mail box.

I kind of need a physical mailbox. Where else I can get the material "stuff"? A virtual brake pad doesn't stop my car as good as a real one :)

Germany relies on DHL-makes the USPS look like a bunch of Rhodes Scholars. A friend shipped a custom ring from Scotland to Connecticut last week but inadvertently put "UK" instead of "US" on the country line. Tracked it to a postal hub in Miami where it was waiting to go back across the pond. A customer service rep actually located the package, had it pulled and redirected to it's correct destination and his gf got her ring for Xmas.

usps is nothing but trouble, anyway it goes the customer loses.they suck

I live in Canada and anytime I get anything shipped from the U.S. I try to use USPS and have never had a problem. The courier companies charge huge brokerage fees that the post office doesn't so it is much cheaper unless you are dealing with a company that lets you pre-pay the duty and taxes. Also if they try to deliver a package and I am not home I just have to drive to the corner post office to pick it up.One thing I could never understand though is I live a few hundred miles from the U.S. border and it didn't matter if I was getting something shipped from North Dakota or Florida, the cost was the same.

It's because the USPS uses variable rate zone pricing in the US and flat rate country-pricing outside the US.

That is what I don't understand, why do they use flat rate pricing to Canada? There can be a huge variation in distance and their competitors use zone to zone?It just means if I order something from North Dakota I am subsidizing the next guy who orders a parcel from Florida. It used to be I would never think of ordering anything from China but for some reason most items I buy shipping is cheaper from China than from the U.S. even though I am only a couple hundred miles from the border.

USPS is great west of the Mississippi River. Once the package gets east of there though, USPS sucks a$$

They have a system in place yet once the package gets out of KC going east, they don't use it. I sense a lack of accountability in the tracking system. I had a package going to NC , tracking said expected delivery was 12-22, even when I checked it on the 24th :scratch:
The last scan into the tracking system was when it left Kansas city .

I've never had anything get lost, but it is common for priority mail sent east to take over a week, not the 2-3 days they "sell" you with no guarantee

USPS is not going anywhere. They have great rates and deliever on Saturday. I have friends with the UPS and they subcontract the USPS on small package delieveries because the USPS is more efficient at delievering those than the UPS is.
