I just put a Gen2 rear axle in my 94 Sport. It works fine. I would like to know if anyone has hooked up the trailing arms from the frame to the axle or the shock assembly on the diff and if so what was the result? Could you tell any difference?

Trailing arms?? For the shock no it makes no difference

There are two locating or trailing arms that go from the top of the axle on each end out by the brakes to the frame on 2nd gen explorers. There is also a shock that goes from the pinion area on the carrier up to the frame. Ford put them there for a reason. I am sure the trailing arms stop spring wrap and the shock stops, oh I dont' know, maybe viberation at certain speeds.

Has anyone hooked them up when they did an axle swap to see what the results are?

I didn't or haven't seen ones with the arms before.i had the shock and took it back off, didn't notice anything.did you swap mc out also?

Its a first gen with 2gen rearend? :) guess it could work in either place, may get more response over there tho

No, its a first Gen 1994 Explorer Sport with a 2nd Gen disk brake rearend

The rearend had mounts on top out by the brakes that a rod attached too that went to the frame. There was a bracket on the frame that mounted at the same location as the handbrake bracket just in front of the rearend. Between those two points was a control rod or a trailing arm or whatever you want to call it. I am sure Ford put it there to stop axle wind.

I just wanted to know of all the guys who put 2nd gen axles in their 1st gen what the seat of the pants difference was.

Yes I did swap out the MC and bleeding it was very difficult. I finally had to take it in for a power bleed and then the pedal was rock solid. The brakes were so much better than the old drums it was amazing. I tow a popup trailer all over. I no longer felt like I had to put on trailer brakes becuase my life was at stake. Going from 308s to 378s with limited slip was a plus too.

I think this thread should be moved back to modified 1st Gens!

Haha a(modified 1991-1994) im with you buddy.what do you use the truck for??offroad or street?if street then those bars will help axel twist and hop and yea that shock might help at high speeds.with my big tires and soa i didn't notice anything

Also if 4x4 they will limit flex that's why i removed them

Yea one of my fav mods too!!if your towing then they may help.

I tow a popup for camping and then off road it when I get there. Can't do anything too extreme cause I need to get home. I had bought a no rust 2wd 94 Explorer Sport. I then did a ton of work. A new transmission converted to accept a transfer case. New heads, every electronic piece was replaced, new injectors, changed the rearend and this weekend will be puting in a 4wd front end. Also replaced all the AC. Oh, I am also updating the seats while I had to get to the cover plate for the shift linkage. I will do a complete writeup in a couple of weeks when I am finished
