I checked out my rear end because of the whine I have and thought that it was leaking fluid from the housing. Well upon further inpection, I realized it was the rear pinion seal was leaking and throwing oil all over the underside of the explorer.
Can you take the drive shaft off, take off the adaptor thing and pull out that old seal. Then take the new seal, soak it in oil and hammer it in...probably using the old seal to make sure it seats right. I know there is also a crush washer that I will have to be careful about.
I am hoping I can do that and don't have to go through the whole rear end just to replace that seal.
