Has anyone attempted a swap from a Bronco II to an Explorer using the spare tire holder that goes over the gate? I have a donor Bronco II that I can steal it from. I have 31's and I want to keep a spare that will fit it.

Thanks!

It's could be done, but with a lot of work. You'd have to do a lot of reinforcing on the side panel to hold a tire. Plus the tail gate wouldn't stand up to the abuse of closing it everytime you got in and out of the rear.

There are several compaines that make a tire carrier for the 1st gen explorers and there are a ton of threads if you want to search for them.

Also, a 31 will fit under it. Do you have a hitch? Some can get one in there with and and some can't.

thanks JoshC! that is what i needed to know. i don't have a hitch yet but I need one. got to pull my boat and snowmobiles. :)

2 problems with that type of carrier:
1. Part of it is attached to the body and part is attached to the bumper/frame. These flex at different angles when you wheel- not good-eventually they will come apart from the body.

2. really only designed to carry stock tire size.

It's not worth the trouble to try and mount it on your EX.
