On my '96 explorer, the black side part of the tailgate(right next to the window on either side), is fading, and it turning from black to an ugly grey. Looks to be from the sun maybe. Has anyone else had this problem and if you have, how can i fix it and how much would it cost?

Thanks a ton

First of all, welcome to the site.

You have a couple of options.

1) I think there is a product called "Back to Black" or something like that. You can put it on and it will remove the current faded layer of paint to the next layer. I have not used this product, but some of the guys who have says it works great.

2) You can tape off the rest of the tailgate, windows, body panels etc. and just spray paint that part of the hatch (guess they are the "D" pillars). I've done that with my '91 using 'wrinkle black' spray paint and have been pleased with the results.

Either option, you're only in for about $20.

Good luck.

I have used Mothers Back to Black on that very area you're referring to and it worked great for me. For best results, coat the whole area good with the stuff, them wipe, then repeat a few times. Mine are still looking good! :)

Thanks a bunch

I repainted the pillars with some metallic black paint they sell at Advance Auto. Then I sprayed 3 coats of clears to make it look glossy. Here's a pic of mine after:

'96explorereddiebauer you just inspired me. That shiny black gloss look would look AWESOME on my all black '95! Woohoo, weekend project. :D

I usually just buff them out. It works really good, but you have to know what you're doing.

Hey it's good that worked out for ya! :)

I tried buffing mine out....it went immediately to the primer or bare metal.

Got some duplicolor black primer and gloss black paint and repainted after sanding off the old black coat. I just need to feather sand with some 2500 to smooth it out a bit and then apply 3 coats of clear coat to seal it in. I am doing the same thing to the panels between the front and rear door windows.

i used back to black and it was ok til a pressure wsher got it and then it back to be ****ty. so i used tremclad semi-gloss bare metal spray paint. worked good, i like the semi gloss over the high gloss, but dam man, '96explorereddiebauers looks seweet.
o and i also did the area between the front and back doors.

hey '96explorereddiebauer i cant see ur pic of the black paint u did on it...can u send me a pic to COUNTRYJEEPIN3@AOL.COM

Also Did u sand the body down?..What sand paper did u use?

Also did u take the body parts off one by one or just spray the puppy down?

Thanx
Jay

just scuff it up with some 120 grit, then finish with 240, wash with good paint prep wash, prime, lightly sand the primer with 240, wash again, and paint. i paited mine with the rattle can method along time ago, and it still looks good. now i need to do the strip on the doors.

you cant take the black parts on the gate off. they are actually "stickers" with trim around the edges. you could remove the gate to paint this area, but thats way too much work. just tape around the area, and use a drop cloth to cover everything else.

Jay, here're a couple of pics for ya. Follow James's instructions and you'll be good to go. Good luck with your project. Remember to snap some before and after pics!!!
