rear timing chain tensioner

Well guys- remember I had that exhaust fitted recently- well while i was under the car to look it over as it was been fitted, and tested for leaks, i heard a slight rattle at the rear of the engine drivers side- figure its the tensioner needing replacing- still have not got the part yet- just no time! But its a job I have to do- cant take the risk.................Check yours by listening from under the car as she runs- worth at least listening in case yours needs doing also eh?

I believe it can wreck the engine just as bad as the timing is actually run by chainlinks beween both sides and these engines just are killed when all the parts come together in an explosive and shattering way with vales bending and breaking, possible cam damage and probable piston wrecking also----------Not a recoverable situation in the main!
Get yours checked folks, too many lumps are dying here and well the numbers are falling fast aint they. Look at e bay, you will be lucky to find an Ex with no timing chain rattle, and you will see in time a lot with, Not RUNNING in the discription!
Its my main fear to be honest, if I could go without my Ex and had the 1600 quid to spare I would give her to Duncan to rip the lump out and have a transplant with an engine that has had the timing gear all re done. Oh well, I will get that done this week or next as soon as Fraud call to say the parts in!

good advice h ,i changed mine and still got the noise on occasions which convinces me that its not the tensioners as it would be constant,i would also advise changing the rear as a matter of course as its cheap enough to do as a precautionary if nothing else.as it happens im not paranoid about it now anymore and am resigned to the fact that if it goes it goes and will get a recon engine from duncand of england and will see it as an investment on a few years worry free motoring as this guy knows his stuff.regards richard

Extra 'insurance' to my mind with regard to the chains, guides and tensioners, is a really good quality fully synthetic oil like Mobil 1.

BIGHMV, I thought a new tensioner would cure my front chains light rattle but apparantly this is on the verge of going and to top it off I had my explorer up on the ramps at K/Fit today whilst they remade one of the joints on the exhaust, I too have that same rattle going on!

I see a guy from Newport (I believe a member from here) will pull the engine out, repair it and re-install for £800 WOW, now is this just too good to be true??

With this in mind where do I go or is it simply a matter of who's the closest?

Good luck mate, let me know- I am hoping that the rear tensioner sorts my noise out, failing that it must be the cats or one of them or it could be the oil pump, in the sump pan under the strenghtener panel- not an easy job!

i phoned Justin at explorer parts, booked it in for the wednesday just gone, drove down tuesday afternoon and was kindly lent another explorer whilst the work was carried out. I picked my explorer up last night and what a difference, quality work using Ford parts with a 12 month guarantee, the engine is now whisper quiet and I can hoof it without a worry in the world.............WAHOOOO

£800, not a penny more and a top professional job!

I've heard rumor of some bad stories about these rear timing chains, but I'm not up to speed on the situation. Can anyone tell me which motor has the problem, what the main problem(s) are, and how hard the parts are to replace? Does the tranny have to come out to work on rear chains? I don't even remember seeing a chain cover in the back of my 98 limited. I think it's got the OHC motor. Any pics of this stuff?

Hi , its the sohc engine as found in the 4 litre Ex, its a massive job and the engine has to come out to do the whole job, chains tensioners and guides. worse still- no timing marks- so special tools are reguired that are very, very rare here. I am certain the OHV never suffered this fault like the sohc.........If I was you I would not worry, the sohc had a tsb on it for this- but sadly the UK ones in the main slipped through the net!

Just replaced my rear tensioner- you will need, 27 mm socket and 3/4 inch drive and a massive long extension- went well and has made a massive differance.

Bolt was in really, really tight tho so be prepared for some swearing and groans!
