Hey guys.....so before I spend a bunch of money, I just wanted to know if it is better to rebuild the heads I just took off my 92 X.....or should i just buy new ones with new valves and springs, etc. I spent the time to tear them out and just want to go with the best option. Ive heard that I should rebuild and ive heard that I should buy new heads.....so just want to see what you guys have to say. Thanks!

If yours are in great shape and have NO cracks, absolutely NONE, not even a hairline under a microscope, then sure, you can just get some new hardware and throw it on there.

Most of these heads seem to crack though, and while you have the heads out and off, you could be saving yourself a lot of hassle down the road (and the hassle of buying the parts to rebuild) by just getting yourself a complete set of heads.

I'd say buy new ones (from Alabama Cylinder Head or another quality supplier, not parts store stuff), and if your old heads are still in good shape, sell them off to make some money back.

Hey thanks for the reply....there doesn't appear to be any cracks or anything abnormal on the outside of the head....thats not to say that there might not be anything on the inside where i cant see. Alabama Cylinder Head seems to be a good company to go with....for only $205 for a complete head, it seems more cost effective to do that then to rebuild mine. The valves alone would cost over $100 to replace, or at least that is the cheapest I found.

I also found new ones on ebay for $330 for two new heads with valves/springs from a buyer called odessa*cylinderhead (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-...uckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1719wt_939)....I dont know if those would be a good to go with or not???

Well the Odessa heads certainly SOUND nice for the $330 and the description, new heads, precision work, and a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. You may want to message them and ask if they still want your old heads back as a core on a new part, most new cyl heads don't have a core charge since they aren't a rebuilt part.

IF the Odessa heads are the same NEW Mahle castings like Alabama Cyl head has, and the hardware on them is top stuff, $330 shipped (especially across the US to Washington) with a 2 year warranty might be the deal of the century. Sell your old complete heads on ebay for ~$100-130 and you effectively bought two new complete heads for half what they usually cost.

is there different casting that would be an improvement over the old castings? like a different year?
