My starter recently went by the wayside, it got progressively weaker and weaker. it was soaked in oil, I think my leaky valve cover gasket killed it.

My question is: Given that the oil probably killed it, is it rebuildable? if so, what kind of kit would rebuild it?

I got a new TYC starter from Rockauto for a good price, but it doesn't sound as good as the original, and I figured this might be an opportunity to learn how to rebuild a starter.

Thanks all.

rebuilding a starter is easy if you can find a kit for it. you need to first determine if it's rebuild-able. is the armature damaged? are the windings okay? do you also need a solenoid? start by disassembling cleaning and examining the components. if the armature is damaged where the brushes ride, or if the winding are fried. throw it away. a shop that rebuilds starters and alternators has the equipment to test and repair damaged elements, but the cost will be about the same as buying a reman starter.
