recharging an R-12 with R134-a

I had a 1990 Bronco II, originally filled with R-12. I purchased a cheap ($25?) conversion kit from WalMart (or KMart?) that included the conversion fittings, a filler hose, and one can of R134. I think I bought two more cans of R134 to make a full fill. I removed the R12, pulled a vacuum on the system for an hour to test the soundness of the fittings and such, then put the R134 in until the system got cold. Job complete. Worked like that for 8 years, never had a problem. The engine blew up before the A/C quit.
