So it is official. I got our families 92 explorer back. Some stats:

1992 Explorer eddie bower
4x4
217k miles on original engine and tranny
LEAKS OIL LIKE AT AN ALARMING RATE
broken passenger side rear window motor

So I want to use this truck to tow our flat bad trailer with my 65 bug. Should be around 4k pounds but would like 5k pound capaity... or greater.

Since this is going to be a tow vehicle anyone have any pointers as far as engine or tranny combo's?

Swap in a 5speed and get rid of the al4d auto tranny. Get another engine and start working.

find out what rear end ratio you have, if its anthing other than 3.73s, swap to 3.73s, that will help your pulling power a lot, if you switch to a 5 speed manual with the 3.73s and stick with stock tires, you should have much better pulling power, and you can get rid of that less than great al4d, then if you do a nice 4.0 build you should be ready to haul

How hard is it to swap to a 5 speed? I know you will have to cut the floor but anything else?

What about a v8 option?

v8 is alot of work....i perfer 4.10s for towing($.02)....stick is a must with heavy duty clutch and convert rear to HD discs...

Here's basic question...

How do I tell what ration rear end I have? What is the difference?
