Remote start for an 02?

My wife has an 02 explorer and I would like to install a viper remote start(5101) I have heard you need an additional module to overide the Pats factory security and that it requires 2 keys to program it. Does anyone have any knowlege on how hard this is?, I only have one key to the vehicle right now. Any help would be appreciated, I have a factory repair manual and am pretty decent with wiring. It does require two keys to program a new one, and you will need a key to overrride the PATS system. If you only have one key now, you will need to have a second one programmed by Ford. You can buy the blank, unprogrammed keys off EBAY for a lot less than Ford charges, then take the key to Ford to have it programmed. Once you have the second key, you don't need Ford to program subsequent keys. Programming the keys isn't difficult, the owner's manual tells you how.

Also, when you get one to override the PATS system, you may want to program it, and then cut the key part off (or file off the teeth) so someone can't get to it and use it to start the vehicle.

Thanks that answered alot of my concerns any idea how much they charge for the programing at ford? I will definatley search ebay for the keys need a spare anyway! Thank's Brandon

You can have a key made and programmed by a locksmith. It will be much cheaper.
The dealer wanted $200 and I got one from a locksmith for $75.

You need 2 keys not 3, what you do is program the module as if it were a 3rd key, buy the module at ebay as well, my friend has them at his shop at ~ 40, I got it off of ebay at 15 shipped.
