has anyone on here bought a remote starter for their explorer? i saw a good price on the "bulldog remote starter" kit and it looks pretty good and easy to assemble and wire up... any suggestions or brand names please post back...

the link to the one i saw
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KLUWAW/ref=nosim/?tag=nextag-auto-20&creative=380333&creativeASIN=B000KLUWAW&linkCode=asn

i would stay away from bulldog. i would go with anything made by directed electronics(viper, clifford, python, etc.) or audiovox prestige. if you are really interested in an audiovox system, i can get them pretty cheap(i can get a 2 way system with alarm and all the bells and whistles for around $150). let me know if it would be of any interest to you.

I agree with the above.

I have a clifford matrix 50.5x and love it. Eventually I want to hook up the other relays to it (windows up/down, trunk pop, etc) but I don't think I'll ever get around to it, it's been a year... The 70.5x is out now, if you want the newest.

Remote start in the summer is really nice. I'm sure it's the same for the winter up there.

Not to mention that is has a 1 mile range. It's not really 1 mile, but I can go into the mall and get an alert if anything happens no matter where in the mall I'm at.

I wish they would make a matrix system that you can make custom like the G5.

I have one of the cheap bulldog systems on my 97 (I think it was about $40 at walmart). Installed about 4 years ago and it still works great. Its very basic with no frills, and I didnt even hook up the door lock/unlock mechanism to the key fob. However, it starts the truck remotely which is all i really needed.

well thats good news... do u kno if installation was a pain in the ass? im thinking of doing it myself if i order it if the box has directions

and the other guys who replied on here, im just looking for a cheap starter... an alarm isnt a big thing for me cuz i dont really have anything in my car that i care that much about protecting... i have a stock radio and like pens and some cds and stuff in my car but i usually dont let it get too cluttered anyway... the reason i asked about the starter is cuz when my car was wrecked, i drove an 08 buick lucerne with the northstar V8 and a remote starter for about a month... range was limited since it was a stock starter with an OEM remote, but just having that little feature is really really convenient... anymore information on the system for 150 that u mentioned would be cool if u wanna tell me a little more about it and how reliable it is...

i must stress that my main thing is to get the AC going before im in the car, so if it just starts it up, id rather something that powers up the car... my car already has a ****ty enough AC and it takes a while to cool, so getting it started about 15 mins before i leave school would be convenient... thanx for the replies

FYI, you can get a 50.5X for like $210 these days...

The main thing is the range. With some of those cheap starters the range SUCKS, and if you're inside you don't know if it started or not. With 2-way it shows you.

As far as hooking it up, it's easy... real easy... Don't forget you'll also need to buy a PATS module for it too. You'll either have to program the box or program a key for that box (depending on which one you get).

i have the python on my 04

blitz, how much would the total price be and what would come with that? alarm and starter or just starter? how easy is it to hook up the pats module and how much does one cost?

mike, how much was the one u got and how reliable is it? ease of installation? range? alarm and starter or just starter?

take a look at that link. it has all the specs about it. i had that system in my old car and it never failed me and now i have the audiovox 998 system which is the same thing but has a different style remote(text messages instead of pictures). the two way feature is probably the best part and no matter which one you go with, you are going to want a two way system.

what does two way mean? that one looks pretty good and such but i really have no prior knowledge at all of what the features r... in my mind its alarm and starter, and thats it lol... act like ur talking to a 5 year old haha

two way means that the "brain" of the remote start/alarm will talk back to the remote. if you remote start the car, it will tell you that it started successfully or not, no guessing there. say you are in the middle of the mall and your car gets broken into, it will notify the remote about an intrusion. i will check with my distributor and see if i can get a two way remote start with no alarm.(that way it would be cheaper!)

Yeah, 2-way is awesome. No way I'd install any system without one.

bigapple, look at the remote. When you hit a button it sends a signal to the car alarm (one-way alarms stop here), the alarm activates and then sends a signal back to your remote and shows you the status of what it did.

Also, if someone messes with it, it will send you a signal to the remote. IE: you're walking in the mall, at a store, etc and someone tries to break in, or they bump it with their bumper, etc. It will send you a notice and you can see what it is. If you really get crazy you can set it up so it will show you if you have an open door, hood, trunk, etc.

As far as PATS goes, you're going to need that for ANY remote starting system you buy. Do you have 2 or more keys for your car currently?

To answer you question to me, it was a pretty easy instalation and I did it myself in about 2hours. The range is not the greatest, but it easily starts my truck from inside my house even when it is half way down my street. Dont know the actual range.

thanx for the help and i like the way that one looks... im the same with a PATs system as i am about the remote starter being completely new to it... how much would it be and if u buy that 50.5 with the alarm and such does it come with a PATs system or is that always separate? if so, how much do they usually run for and whats a reliable brand?

i appreciate the help... if i decide not to spend too much money, this is a good fallback and its good to kno id be able to manage it

250 installed by circuit city in overland park ks in 4 hours works great if you don't use your ford remote

Well, the PATS system is part of your car. It's the chip in your key. Your X won't start without one.

There are 2 types, one is a box that you put a programmed key into. The other type is basicly a box with the key chip in it. They have cables to interface with your remote start box and a wire that goes up around your ignition.

They're like $25/$50 for most of them.

Search ebay for 556UW

they look pretty cheap and such but i dont see my car on the list... how hard is it to wire up the PATs system and is it compatible with my car, even if its not on the list? thanx for ur help man... much appreciaed

It's easy... but you need to buy the PATS type box that works with whatever remote start system that you buy. If you don't have one, your truck wont start.

unfortunately, my distributor does not carry one that is a two way system without the alarm. but you can hook it up without the alarm and the resell the shock sensor and siren and recover some of the money.
