Ok I got a buddy who said he would give me a discount on a new paintjob. So if i wanted say a pearlescent white, or a metallic white or something how much would it cost you think? (including the 2-tone) Say he gave me 20% off a normal price what do you think i could be paying?

My paint looks shiny and all but all the little marks on it and scratches and chips... Oh and PS removing dents easier with paint off?

FILL ME IN HERE FOLKS lol im retarded pertaining to body work.

Depending on the shop a paint job can run from $400 to $4,000 and more...

that kind of paint and body work. if its a good shop about $2000

proper prep and application of Pearlescent.... $2000 min.

for an SUV at our shop, just paint no body work $4,500.00

 Thats an expensive shop! I wouldn't go by that price, they must do some exceptional work though, otherwise they wouldn't be in business. I think I remember you talking about a guarantee of some kind though right?

First off, is your explorer an Eddie Bauer? Just wondering cause of the 2 tone. I kept mine 2 tone and always will. IMHO it is a must on EB's. Now for the paint job. I would say anywhere from 2K to 5K for a professional type paint job. Make sure you get a warranty on it too. Paint is very expensive. Needless to say what good labor costs. But this is another one of those situations where I always say, "You pay for what you get". A $400 paint job is just $400 worth of worthless paint being tossed on your Explorer. Pay the bucks and get it done right the first time.

This kid with an eclipse it cost his $2600, but his is green

$4500 for an explorer is stupid. i wouldnt go over $3000 flat for body and paint. 3000 is a damn fine paint job 4500 is for like your vette or gto

RHINO LINE IT. THAT WAY WHEN YOU GO OFFROAD, IF YOU HIT A TREE OR ROCK, YOU'LL JUST BOUNCE OFF IT. EASY UPKEEP AS WELL AND FORGET ABOUT IT RUSTING.  :D

Exactly. I plan on spending about $1500 (all prep MYSELF) on a the paint when I'm all done. Either Lamborgina Silver or Competition Orange :D

We charge so much for several reasons.
We warrenty the work for life, so the job has to be done right.

The profit margin is rather slim ( believe it or not )
We charge so much to scare people away, but if it doesn't we do rather well.

90% of our work is collision repair, insurance work.
There is SO MUCH more money to be made in that realm.

You know the saying " money talks "

$4500 is a deal for a paint job when you consider the estimate I got at a shop for a door ding. $1200 to fix a ding and refinish the door. Crazy if you ask me, but they do awesome work. I just left the ding though. lol

no i can pretty safely say that $4500 is not a deal on a paint job. and where the heck are you taking your car to have a dent pulled? a Bentley dealership?

With R&I times and blending adjacent panels it adds up quickly.
Keep in mind labor rates will vary a great deal. Maybe rates in Oak Harbor are still much less then here near Baltimore.

The trouble with trying to compare paint job prices is kinda similar to comparing rebuilt transmission prices.... what goes into the mix can vary widely and the end user may not even have a clue.

Imagine you want a full color change. Suddenly we are talking a lot of "hidden" hard to reach areas that really "ought" to be painted to match. If they are - $$$, if they are not, saved $$$ and a lesser job. Materials. Top grade paint and clear and primers (wet on wet for example) and all 3K material (catalyzed) may run ya $500 for a SUV...

You gonna mask or pull everything off the car? You gonna leave all the glass in or pull some of it?

What will the prep consist of? What minor fill and repair might be done? How will be car be sealed or primed?

When the paint and clear are shot, how many coats of each? will the clear be guide coat sanded with 3000 grit paper and buffed?

Every step in the "ultimate job" takes time. For many the result might be closely approximated by taking shortcuts or eliminating steps. Does that mean the job is crap? No. But it is not the job I have described either. It WILL be cheaper though.

I'd like to finish by saying you get what you pay for, but sadly, that's not true in every case. I will say that I'm of the belief that in Monmix's shop... you pay top dollar and get top drawer.

Pays your money and takes your choices.

I could not have explained it better my self :)

Well ok i'm willing to pay 2 grand to have it done right. Since my car is already white, i see no point in painting inside the doors and stuff. Unless it's another hundred as opposed to maybe another 500 or a grand.

And i can do a lot of the prepping myself, sanding, pulling off stuff and what not, any ideas on a paint shop to try? I got a buddy who said if i buy the materials he'll do it for 1000$

He used to paint BMW's, Mercedes, Lexus, etc. for show purposes with his buddy he said he'd fly in to help me. Great friend but is it worth it? I think so but you guys most likely know more than me. A dust-free facility is a definate need and I'm not positive he can provide that.

But i guess if the guy paints BMW and Mercedes he probably can hook that up. Oh well I guess my new question is where, and how to go about searching.

I'm not kidding i went to a place called Tim Ranch (sounds crappy right?) 6-8 thousand $$ saying they pull everything off, and that pearlescent cadillac white (the color he says looks best for what i want) is a 3 stage paint, and all this and that.

Fill me in here :D

Tri-coats (3stage paint) is a PITA but looks awesome! We went through a lot of that stuff last winter, a KIA pearl white and Mustang laser red. Great combo. and don't judge the place by the name, I bet they do a fantastic job.
