Replace auto transfercase with manual

My father has a '98 Explorer with a 5sp, and the control-trac 4wd system. The electric motor on the transfer case is out again for the third time. And he is sick of it. Is it possible to remove the electric motor and install a lever? Is there a manual transfer case with a lever on it that will bolt in? My 94 has an electric shifted transfer case that has been reliable, will one of those bolt in? Thanks in advance.

There is the Atlas II, Ray put it in his 97'. http://www.explorer4x4.com/atlas_2.html I was interested in finding out whether the handles could be hidden under the center console in some way since most 95+ who would like to have a real 4wd all have center consoles. Ray, do you have some pics of what you did?

This truck is a daily commuter, not an off-road machine. The Atlas II is way more transfercase than he needs or wants to pay for. I was realy wondering if something like from an earlier Ranger or Bronco II would fit. Heck, even an F-150 transfer case would be acceptable. Does anyone know what the spline count is on any of these vehicles? Will any of those bolt up? Having the driveshafts changed wouldn't be so bad, I could live with that.

You can also get the Atlas II in 3.1 low gear ratio, if you're not gonna be doing any rock crawling.

Not to throw this thread off, but quick question Ray. What did you end up doing with your rear leaf's and your OME shocks and the Edelbrocks you had sitting around? I was just curious. As far as a t-case goes, I wouldn't mind have a manual either, let me know what you find out Oliver. They don't make a manual t-case for the new Rangers do they? I seriously doubt they do. But an old Ranger or Bronco II might work. Does anyone know if they were any good?

I'd have to agree with you, that motor on the transfer case is one of the most annoying things in the world. Find out the model number of the transfer case, and see if it's available in manual shift. ON the 92 models (and im sure some other years) they used a chain drive case (borg warner 1354) It's available in manual and electronic shift. Check into it, but you said you have a 98 that might cause complications.

Yes; at one time a manual shift T/case was an option (up to 94?). Ford has been real good about sticking with the same bolt pattern and spline count on their vehicles. I'm not positive, but I think an older B/W with the shifter will bolt up. Is the case in the BroncoII,s the same model (1356)? Anyone know? I've even read where the cases of 1/2 tons etc. are the same pattern.

There is a Factory manual t-case. You will need a Different front Drive Shaft.
