OK, backed out of driveway fine, stepped on clutch..it went to floor and stayed there...couldn't get truck back into gear. Checked clutch fluid..was low filled up tried pumping...clutch built some pressure then back to floor. (BTW: was pouring out so couldn't tell if vehicle was leaking anything.)

Managed to get truck back in garage...fearing the worst..removed little rubber plug in transmission bell housing looked inside and saw this:

Not good huh? So what exactly is involved in dropping the transmission and replacing the slave? ...best part is managed to tear my bicep trying to lift/push the truck in and out of the garage by myself..lol...sucks getting old.

(Oh yeah, it's a 97 4.0 ohv with a 5 spd. obviously)

is it 2wd or 4wd?
How many miles are on the clutch?

4wd...clutch and slave just replaced about 2 years (10k miles) ago.

(from what I recall of the job back then was writing a sizable check to the garage and waiting)

I had my 04 Ranger done in July. I replaced everything, pressure plate, slave cylinder, throw out bearing, flywheel, pilot bushing, rear engine seal, both in and ouput shaft seal on the gearbox, and transfer case seal. Parts were just over $400, I bought. Labor was $500, by a trusted mechanic.
