how easy/hard is it to replace the stock auto hubs with the warn manual ones? also, i read something about it being a 27-spline axle...is that what mine is? i also want to take my old auto hubs and put them on our other x (her hubs are old with 160k on them and dont work so rather than replace hers, i want to replace my working ones with 90k and put mine on her truck).

also, what tools would i need?

i have a '93 x 5-speed with 3.27s and she has a '91 auto with 3.55s

did it, done it....

Easy job with the right tools. figure 30 min a side. buy a hub sprocket. $19. easier than using channel locks and you really need it to torque the conversion nuts down.

Buy through the net 184 for everything. While you are there, consider repacking bearings and brakes

do a search on hubs.

just had a brake job and bearing repack done. will i be fine with the whole conversion kit plus a decent set of craftsman tools (ie a good socket set and a few other hand tools)?

All you really need is a pair of needle nose pliers, a pair of channel locks, a pencil magnet, a torque wrench and the special hub socket mentioned above.

Search the links. I know i posted a site that provides detailed pictures of the job. Can't remember it now. It was on a ford ranger web site.

tools are fine. I used a paper clip in place of a magnet and the hub tool is a univerally designed tool. Fits most vehciles ford, chev etc....

I just finished doing this sunday, first warm day since before christmas. It had to be about the easiest job I've ever done. The instructions say 1-1.5 hrs per side. I was done with both sides in under one hr. It feels good to be able to put it in 4x4 reliably once again. Now to pay it off and get it in the air.

:chug: :chug:

sounds like something i could tackle...but not until i get the truck back from the body shop. so, i'm assuming that the front axle (so-to-speak) is 27-spline???
