Hi
My 1999 Ford Explorer just failed its MOT with a major leak in the centre section of the exhaust. Garage guy was very vague about where the leak was and did not want to get involved as it could mean replacing from manifold back.
I am going to try and replace it myself or if poss just repair the hole. Will a repaired exhaust pass a UK MOT?
Any advice would be gratefully accpeted.
Many thanks
Phil

I suspect you need to make it air tight. That may or may not be possible depending on where and what type of leak it is. You may get by with using exhaust tape and or exhaust sealer.

You could also try a band clamp if it's just a small hole. It's basically a round piece of stainless steel that clamps over the exhaust pipe. Buy the same diameter as your pipe. It's used to butt two pieces of exhaust tubing together without welding. Kind of like a big compression fitting.

hi and thanks
the hole i have found is a small crack where a new pipe has been expanded to fit the older part of the exhaust. I think i will use the putty stuff and use a band clamp instead of the normal clamp.
fingers crossed

You can get a band clamp that has a "Lap joint " in it which is designed to fit over two pipes of different dimensions. I think it would work well in this application. Not sure if you need the putty stuff though. Some people cut up an aluminum beer can and use that as a "gasket" under the clamp to give it a better seal.
