are u speaking about 5.0 motors or general or the 5.0s in explorer because my old explorer had one and it would slowly bounce but more or less just sit there my mustang had a rev limiter so the real question is what year and what 5.0 are we talking
i am going to supercharge. i don't want the engine to cut fuel to keep the revs under 6000. it back fires when it hits the limiter. makes me think that it is cutting ignition and fuel is building up in the exhaust.
are you sure its actually back firing or is it just hitting the limiter might sound like its on a two step or launch control since you do have rear cats removed and glass packs and side exhaust if thats the x we are talking about
Its a loud bang, say, when it shifts from first to second and the engine hits 5.6K or what ever the limiter is set at. but that besides the point.
Need to know if the ECM cuts the fuel to limit the revs or if it cuts ignition. If I was the engineer I would cut ignition. Because if the driver gos WOT and then you cut fuel the minuter is going to go lean and melt the engine. but imports do fuel cuts to keep revs down. I don't know
I don't know for sure but with fuel injection the PCM always knows how fast the engine is running from the CKP and knows the demand from the TPS and the load from the MAF sensor. Since the PCM is cutting the engine speed (I believe it fires the ignition on alternate revolutions) then it can control the injector pulse width accordingly to maintain fuel economy.
I doubt that you're hitting the rev limit when the PCM is controlling the automatic shifting. The WOT shift points are established by the PCM and are based on engine speed. Unless you have a custom tune the shift points will be below the rev limit. The only way I hit the rev limit (6250 rpm for the SOHC) is by holding in gear with the selector. I had James set my upshift points for each gear to keep the engine speed in the best power band when dropping to the next gear.
Yep. Only hits the limiter when manually select first gear then manually shifting to second. The ECM probably controls the revs by cutting both fuel and ignition.
