I’m thinking of removing the running boards on my 2003 XLT because they’re really just in my way.

I’m concerned, however, because I think they might help prevent catalytic converter theft, and if I remove them these cats will be exposed. I’ll be parking it on the street.

Anyone have any thoughts about or experience with this?

If someone really wants your cats they will steal them, running boards or not.
I removed my running boards a long time ago and still have my cats. Meow.

If you are really worried about cat theft, might I suggest one of these modifications

They really aren’t any more exposed without the running boards as they are with.

Great gallery! That simple eight-rod cage one in in pic 4 is probably the best. I'd think even just four rods would be enough to deter anyone to move on to another vehicle!
