also wondering if the stop bumper in the shift motor is okay.....can i just leave it off for awhile so i have the option the hand turn my 4x4 on?

You should be fine doing so, that's what some have done when in a bind and just turned it by hand on the trails, make sure you tie the ends of course up out of the way of heat and moving parts.

thanks for the info. been wanting to check it to see if it even works. had it for a year with no 4x4. fluids new, new electric shift motor(didnt need it), new push button( also, didnt need it), didnt get much info on fixing too many problems from either haynes or chilton......but being in this forum has helped me alot and gain valuable info....thanks again :dpchug: :burnout:

Well since you already replaced the motor and the push buttons maybe it could be the shift module?

As already mentioned you can remove the shift motor and drive around without any problems. I would tie the wire harness out of the way and wrap the connector in a plastic baggie secured by tape to prevent moisture form getting into it.

You mentioned you bought a new shift motor... Did you install it and 4x4 still doesn't work??

yeah i think its an electrical problem now......the good news is the 4x4 works great (turning it by hand) seems a little too easy to turn though. almost can do it by hand. truck has 360000 miles on it. but ive put about 1500 into it. wish i could get the mpg up...still need to replace the drivers side o2. hope thats the problem. is there any way to convert the electronic shift to a manual? thanks for the help.

You can get a manual 1354 from a 1st gen ex 2nd/3rd gen ranger. Or you could put in a BW1350 from a BII and 1st gen ranger but then you have to have your driveshaft modified for it. There is also some member on here that makes a manual shifter that hooks up to the electronic shift transfer case.

okay cool. . .i think id rather have manual than auto. too much computer junk attached to it. seems like the more advanced we get the more problems there are to trouble shoot and fix. the old vehicals are the classics...:salute:

I myself never really had problems with the electric shift but some people do. But anyway those are your options, you can take the floor pan out of the manual shift trucks then you won't have to cut a hole in the floor.
