rust problems

I've got rust on my truck, around the running boards, and on the body where i have some paint chips any way to take it off without damaging my paint?

Not really, The rust is from the metal undernieth the paint. In order to remove the rust, you have to remove the paint. Here's a Thread on a Gen 1 Rocker panel Rebuild. Clicky Here.
Rust is one of those things that just happens. You can always Just clean it up as best as you can and then Spray Rhino Lining on it to seal it. Or POR-15. Good luck either way.
