I found this on a ford truck forum.... lots of info heep sites, but didn't want to post that here for obvious reasons :) http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/899717-anyone-here-paint-their-wheels-black.html

I did repaint my spare steel wheel last December when I got my truck. All I used is some rustoleum brand hammered finish steel gray paint. I scrubbed the wheel down and taped off the valve stem and covered the tire. I think it turned out pretty good over the light gray steel and rust.

Did you properly prep the wheel? Sand to metal, clean with prep solvent. Then prime at least two coats. Sand to rough up, clean agian with prep solvent. Now you are ready to paint. Did you use a hot environment to dry following paint?

I'll give the hammered paint a try next spring,I'm still thinking of moving up to 15" wheels but not to excited about buying new tires. I just bought some wranglers for my explorer,I had the original michelins on there(great tires-great milage).I'll see how the goodyears do. thanks for the info,,later

Check CL in your area... with the wave of bigger rims are better a lot of times you can find a set of 15" with tires for not a lot of $$

Down where I'm at it's pretty common to find a set of 4 tries and wheels for a couple hundred. One time I found a set of Gen 2 X teardrops with tires for $75, only the center caps were missing. I was short on cash so I didn't get them :(.

Good tires and wheels aren't cheap by me,I'll wait till spring.I also have to put a new header in the ranger cab, anybody tackle that one yet ?..it's cloth.

A fairly cheap alternative is the ProComp steel wheels.

I think the OP's point was trying to avoid buying new tires. Hence why I linked the two ads w/ tires.

But yes the new steel wheels are dang near dirt cheap.
