so wile in pismo i thought i blew up a hub. casing me to get stuck in camp about 10 times. ordered some warn premium hubs off e bay and installed them. locked the hubs and spun the tires to see if they where working, and i still have a prob with the driver side. (the axle spins but the drive shaft didn't:()so i poped the cover off and found this.

So both the spider and pinion took a vacation?
What gear manufacturer did you go with -- cauz you might be under warranty on the ring/pinion ;)

EDIT -- and I suggest using some surgical gloves next time, spent oil is more hazardous than new oil. Especially if you've got any cuts 'n stuff on your hands.

looks like just the spiders and oil slinger. luckily i have an extra oil slinger from the old gears. my plan is to just weld it so its locked. and when that brakes i will have money for a full locker.

The oil slinger -- thats a little weird, what do you think could have reached back there and caused that damage? I was thinking the fragments but I'm not sure those things would chew up the slinger like that.

EDIT -- did you check for any play in the pinion? Cauz it almost looks like the slinger came into contact with the ring gear. Which would mean that pinion pulled itself forward towards the centerline of the ring gear -- probably during the high torque situation when the spider gear fractured.

i didn't check that. i hope thats not what happened.:(

this is why i'll keep my street machine on the streets... plus i don't have 4x4.

hope it works out for you man, just looking at it i could tell it was off

any one know if the spiders are interchangeable from the high gear carriers to low gear carriers?

Yeah they should be the same -- the different ones should be between limited slips and non-limited slips.

OK so i just checked the pinion and there is no play. spin the shaft and the oil slinger doesn't hit the ring gear or rum on the housing!:bounce: so i think i will but the spiders from my other Carrier in and call it good. :)

think it will get enough oil like that?

{gijoecam spits tobacco juice on the ground, wiping greasy paws on a greasy shop rag} Well thayer's yer problum rot thayer! [/redneck]

:)

That's crazy...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the slinger help keep the oil from accumulating in the pinion bearings and tending to gush out the seal?

-Joe

Yeah thats my thought Joe. What I do find weird is when an axle is used at the front, of course the rotation is opposite of a rear axle so there is no need for the "oil passage" tunnel thing that goes over the pinion as oil is no longer splashed from the top by the ring gear but is scooted along from the bottom (via the ring gear).

lifeguard379 -- I'd still check the backlash (and maybe the contact pattern too) for any changes cauz I still cant seem to figure out what would have chewed up the slinger other than the ring gear.

The slinger could have been collateral damage after the spider sent fragments sloshing around the case.

thats what i think. wheel speed was prity high when it happened.

well i tried changing the spider with the diff still in the truck. only problem is the cross shaft doesn't fit past the ring gear. so my question now is, if i mark the ring gear and carrier, will it be safe to remove the ring gear with out having to set the gears back up?

Don't waste your time... given all the debris that got slushed around in there, you want to yank the whole thing, flush out the bearings, and give all the gear faces a close inspection. I've got a sneaking suspicion that the gears are going to be chewed up (or at least have a few marks) and the bearings are not going to be long for this world... Personally, I'd replace the bearings, and re-set the gears... It's a pain, yes, but if the bearings take a dive later, now you need to replace the (expensive) gears and pinion instead of the (cheap) bearings.

Check the ring gear, one of the teeth was probably machined down to allow the pin to go in when it was initially installed. It has to be done on some setups. The pin obviously went in, it has to come out.

When you pull it out there will be shims on the side bearings. Just make sure you put the caps and shims back in the same side and you'll be fine.

There is no high-low gear carriers on the ford D35. EDIT, Sorry wasn't paying attention that you have a D44. Weld it or throw an aussie in it. You can pull the carrier out and pull the ring gear off and throw it back in without any problems as long as you dont mix up the shims or races. I'd personally grind a spot in the ring gear for the cross pin to fit past. A lot easier and it won't hurt anything if done properly.

well upon further review there are chips in the ring gear:( so with lack of funds, i welded up the spider gears, and went to play. :)
it will definitely take some getting used to steering this thing, it realy pushes.
and i have never Benn able to lift a tire and just keep going.:D:thumbsup:
