What u-bolts are people using on their solid axles with leaf springs?
or even on rear setups

1/2", 9/16", or 5/8", or did you re-use old u-bolts

is it worth the $ for grade 8 u-bolts?

Order some 5/8"

why skimp here, its only a few $$

as far as I know there isnt a truegrade 8 u bolt, rod goes up to a "b-7" grade which is as strong as it gets for rod. I could be wrong, but thats what I have heard.

Get 5/8 and dont worry about it.

In my SOA I am using U bolt eliminators.

U-bolt eliminators? whats that?

I was looking at these

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...em=290187201685&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI

they have grade 5 and 8

plus they'll make me a set with two square and two round for the same price.

I'm gonna do the square u-bolt setup on the drivers side of my waggy axle aka toyota style, it just seemed easier and less grinding and I don't like the way the round u-bolts dont ride on a round surface on the waggy setups.

I'm using the stock waggy U bolts and plates(with the swaybar mount cutoff) on the front.

On the rear I am using aftermarket stock f150 ubolts. They fit the explorer housing and with the stock ranger block they are the perfect length. I made my own plate out of some 1/2" thick plate I had laying around.

oh, I get it-
I actually thought about making something like that using plates and some straight bolts and not using u-bolts, but then all the force placed on the axle goes through the welds on the leaf spring perches. I guess if the welds were good and the perches were gusseted, it would be strong enough.

I just thought that u-bolts going around the axle might keep the axle from ripping out from under the truck in extreme situations.

too late though, I already ordered some 5/8's grade 8 u-bolts for the d44 and the ford 9 rear.

thanks for the input guys

Where did you order your u bolts from

hey where did you order your u bolts from? I am in the market for some myself, and I would appreciate the info. Thank you. bigpapahutch :us::salute:

I got the u-bolts from ebay-check the link in my prev post
I ordered a set with two 3" round u-bolts and two 3" square u-bolts for the waggy front, and a set of 3-1/8" round u-bolts for the ford 9".
still waiting for a pm to see if he'll combine shipping though.

im guessing he mounted his perch right above the old cast in perch and wants the u-bolts yo go around that.

I was going to do the u-bolts like this:

It just seemed easier with less grinding, and on most of the waggy setups I've seen using round u-bolts, the bolts dont ride on a curved surface. some dont even bother to grind the bottom of the perch round, they just notch out for the u-bolt.

Here's how my perch sits:

and here's the bottom side:

I could grind it round and use the round u-bolts, I'd need three 3" u-bolts and one 3-5/8" u-bolt, but I already made the bottom and top plates for the square shaped ones.

I bought two 3" square u-bolts cause my perch's are 3" wide, and two 3" round ones for the passenger side.

well I closed my ebay deal and ended up with two sets of 5/8" grade 8 u-bolts plus shipping for about $65.

I ordered one set with two round- 3" u-bolts and two square 3" u-bolts for the d44 front: and one set of four 3-1/8" round u-bolts for the ford 9".
