I'm looking to buy a winch in the next month, and I was wondering what everyone was running and any issues with them. I have been looking at the T-maxxs a bit but still not sure. I plan to get a 9000 or bigger. Still unsure of my budget yet, but I would say probally $500-$700.

Thanks;)

All of the major winch manufacturers are reliable -- it comes down to personal preference and style of the winch.

Warn is the industry standard, and their 9000 winches are hard to beat, no matter how you look at them -- reliability, pulling power, etc., but they are also at the top of the heap price wise.

Ramsey, Mile Marker, Super Winch, etc., all have good products, one notch below the Warn (IMO) but a good bang for the buck, especially if you are not using it all the time, or in a competition setting.

Personally, I'm running an import rip-off of a name brand winch myself, for I hardly ever use it and that is good enough for me. I got mine at Sam's Club for under $300. It is exactly like the Ramsey -- and is likely built in the same plant in China, just like the T-Max is identical to the Mile Marker except for the end caps, etc. Harbor Freight also has a couple models that are identical to name brand products, and one of our local club members just got a 9000 from them, and inside it was badged Ramsey!

With any winch, you have to remember that they get hot when used. A long hard pull will tax the best of them, not to mention what it does to the electrical system of the truck... The better the winch, the longer it lasts under high stress. What sets Warn apart from some of the others is their thermal management.

Also check out the new Warn with the air compressor. An impressive piece! I've seen one in person and it is well-built, massive, and to be coveted!

BTW, my kiddo has an older Warn 8274 for sale, which is a highly coveted winch, as it has the fastest line speed of all, yet has good pulling power. You can find him at Moab Off-Road in Louisville, KY. PM steelfish at UCORA.org.

how much does he want for the winch...?

x2 the 8274 kicks ass

I know its higher then your price range but a good friend of mine has a 9.5ti Warn and it is awesome.

bump:D

I have a ramsey 8500 REP and its pretty solid when i first got it my buddy that has a 10,500 mile maker hydro winch on a 4dr taco was talkin alot of crap so i hook up to him and pulled him across the front yard up hill in park and my car was off haha i dont think the last one matters but sounds badass.

So i found a amazing deal on Craigslist...too bad I'm a couple of days late:(

Tell me this was not a awsome deal!

Warn 9.5 TI 9000lb pulling capacity also have 3/8 inch kevlar cable for $500 call Eric

Posted on monday:rolleyes:

Never heard of a Kevlar cable. Would have been a good deal if it was legit.

I personally have a Warn XD900i on my Explorer, a Harbor Freight 8000 ($250 on sale w/ coupon) on my trailer and a T-Max 9000 ($450 on sale) on my Jeep. I dont use the Warn that much but it is definately a nice, well made winch and has worked when I needed it.

The T-max has winched my Jeep up many, many dry waterfalls which were very hard pulls. It has never let me down. The only thing I dont like about it is the remote but it still isnt that bad. It is not as durable as the Warn remote. Summit sells a rebadged T-max which may be more cost effective for you.

The Harbor Freight winch is on my trailer for a reason. I wouldnt trust it on anything else. It is cheaply made, the clutch handle is plastic and could easily break. The cables that hook to the motor are not as big as the ones on the T-max and Warn and I am sure that motor would pull more amps than the Warn or T-max.

The guys that I wheel the extreme trails around here with use a Warn 8274 and a Ramsey 9000 (with integrated solenoid). Both have held up well for them. My friend with the 8274 just had to replace the brake and it was expensive for parts.

I have no personal experience with the Mile Markers but I am always hearing complaints about them on P4x4.

Hope this has helped

Its on my truck.

But if you decide you want a 8274 without the hassle of getting the truck hit me up I got on sitting in my garage.

If your not concerned about the brand and want good power theres,

http://www.cumminstools.com/browse.cfm/4,174.htm

10,000lb for $400 is a good deal.

I think the less expensive are okay to use, thier just a little slower but if your not getting stuck every 10min then who cares. Main thing is your not stuck there waiting for someone to pull you out.

The big decision I saw when shopping was: reliability/warranty of Warn, vs. price of anyone else. I went for cheap. That said I have been very impressed with my Superwinch X9. It has been used many dozens of times and never shown any signs of letting up. And with the money I saved I went and bought synthetic rope and never even used the steel cable.

And going for Warn, you missed it at TDS, but Brian pulled Toms dead rig up a good 50ft 35* incline. Brian only has an 8,000lb Warn, and was loading it down like crazy, but it just kept pulling. It was impressive.
