I have a '99 4dr Explorer with 158k of my own miles. Very few problems with this car from when I bought it new. Recently I have been hearing some screeching from the engine, but I don't suspect a loose belt. It has a more mechanical sound to it leading me to think it might be the water pump. I have not had any temperature swings yet.
I did replace the pump several years ago, so it might be time. I usually hear the "marbles" when the pump is about to go and that hasn't happened yet. The noise goes away when revving the engine, and occurs at a full stop. It still occurs at 35-45 mph as well.
Please let me know your thoughts.
