Ive been trying to figure this out for a bit. The 5.0L was never released for the explorer in Australia in the second gens, however we have had other 5.0L engines released in cars like the Ford Falcon. I am trying to figure out if the 5.0L that was used in 95-~2001 falcon (all models XR6 etc..) was the same engine that was used in the explorer in the US? Does anyone know anything about this? I would like to change over my 4.0L to a 5.0L if that is the actual engine used.

We had the 2nd Gen "Limited" here in the land of OZ, that was a 5 litre Winsor V8 with a 4 speed Auto. It's so hard to find them. I have only ever seen one for sale right after I bought my SOHC V6 over a year ago. Finding one of these engines on its own here in Australia will probably cost well over 5 grand and take months of searching.

I beleive Falcons from the EB onward (I would probably go for an EL) also had an EFI 5 litre Winsor V8 So the Falcon V8 engine block should bolt up to the tranny and engine mounts fairly easily in your Explorer, thats the easy part.

Then you will need a computer to run that engine and transmission combo, or some type of custom tune on a falcon computer. You would be on your own as far as the fuel system, AC system and running the wiring harness through the firewall goes.

If you have the SOHC V6 already then you will be going to a lot of trouble for minimum power gain although there are a lot of performance parts readily avaliable for a Winsor V8.

I personally would probably travel the M90 supercharger route with my SOHC V6. hmmmm, maybe thats what I'll do with my next tax check..:D

The 5.0 uses a different transmission & transfer case. The exhaust manifolds are specific to the Explorer 5.0 engine as well. Since your steering wheel is on the right side, US exhaust manifolds will not fit.

It's quite a challenge in the states to put a 5.0 in a V6 equipped Explorer. I can't even to begin to imagine what it would be like for you guys.

Thanks for the information,

I was under the impression that they only ever released the OHV and SOHC 4.0. I will look around for a 5.0L in the limited.

As for reason, i use it for 4wding and am after an increase in torque and reliability, both things the SOHC 5spd auto was not renowned for. I think getting the falcon v8 might not be so bad, but i'll see i guess.

I was thinking that a good option would be the OHV 4.0 and supercharge it?
