Ok, after the whole maybe 20 minutes of intallation time, i got my shift kit all hooked up and mounted. It took no time at all, it cost 38.40 to my door, and it works great.

On stage I, you can feel the down shifts are much more firm, as well as a little on the up shifts...

On Stage II, you can REALLY feel the downshifts and there is a good improvment on upshift....it shifts much faster and harder than stock

I would reccomend it, i only got to drive with it for maybe five or six minutes, but from what i felt, i was already happy with the product...

Hook us up.. what exactly did you get?

Sounds like the B&M Electronic shift improver?

Tip: the resistor module can get very hot. Mount this away from flammable components (seriously). To cool mine down, I took an old 486 CPU heatsink, cut it in half, put half on each side of the module with some heatsink gunk and electrical tape. The module stays much cooler now and the shifts are more consistent.

Good luck!

Yea, it was the B&M Shift Improver Plus...the electronic one. It was only two wires that hooked into the EEC-V, or PCM, whatever you wanna call it. Yea, in the 5 mintues i ran it, it got really hot.

Alec, i searched for your heat sink thread, but i was unsuccessful....

I have no clue what you are talking about...

Could you please post what materials to use, and where to get them...

Beats the heck out of dropping the valve body doesn’t it? Clean and quick, installed mine while the kids were glued to a cartoon. Except for the clips at the ECU, you can't tell it's there.

Alec,

What tranny do you have? I was under the impresson that these were only for the V8 models.
Though with all that stuff you have you may have the AOD?

4R55E V6 4 gear auto.

I got the heat sink stuff for free from a friend that works at a computer shop. Go to a small local computer repair shop to get the stuff:
486 processor heatsink
heatsink paste/adhesive
normal electrical tape.

Cut the heatsink in half (make it 2 rectangles) with a hacksaw. Using the heatsink paste, put one half on each side of the resistor module. Then, wrap the entire bundle with electrical tape on the ends of the heatsink, leaving the center portions of the heatsink able to radiate heat. Keep in mind that my resitor module isn't mounted to any surface, it's held in place with zipties on some other underdash wires. This way both sides are exposed. But be careful that those other wires aren't meshed into the heatsink "waffle iron".

That good enough?

good enough for me...

If I already have a superchip is there any reason to get this?

It will make the shifts firmer.

Chips: shift points
Shift kits: shift firmness

that's what they do.

Would such a device make a transmission last longer, shorter, or no change? Please explain why, too.

I would think it will make the tranny last longer because the shifting doesn't slip the clutches any more. However, I don't think the manufacturer recommends leaving it on all the time. I turn mine on when I want to get up to speed quick, but turn it off afterwards usually, because the downshifts can be quite harsh. I think it was one of the best, cheapest, quickest to install mods I've done. Mine's a 4R70W tranny with the V8...

Is that the same as my tranny. 1995 XLT Auto?

I was trying to find a shift kit but all I could find were the ones for the V8.

If so what should I look for.

Thanks for the help!

OOp. I found it on my own... So where do you think the best Price is?

Does anyone know what transmission i have??? 96 xlt 4.0 4dr 4wd

You probably have what Alec has.

Here is what I found from Summit.

BMM-70381 Which they state as for use only with the A4OD, whick is with the V8 right?

So then I find on B&M's website that the #70381 can be used with 1995-1997 Explorers w/ trans codes D, E,P, U, H and L.... WTF. I am confused. I want one but don't know if it will work with my truck.

all you have to do is look on the driver door. it will have a tag with your transmission code- like mine says trans code U. the 5.0's have the 4R70W, and it works with them. i think it is only listed for the AODE on summit, but it will work on your X, V6 OR V8...

I take it I'm screwed out of this one because I have the 5spd auto trans w/ OD??? 2001 XLT 4dr with 4.0 SOHC.

hummina hummina

look at your tranny code on the door. its really that simple. if you have code D,E,P,U,H,or L, then it will work... no matter what tranny you have.

If the shift enhancer doesn't work, then you can still get a Superchip to firm up your shifts. The Superchip will allow the transmission line pressure to reach a higher pressure before enableing the solenoids to shift. It will result in a quicker, harder hitting shift. I couldn't stand the factory shifting on my '97 when I temporarily removed my Superchip. It took way too long to shift and I couldn't feel it at all.
