OK I understand that Ford made these as SUVs and that they can go 4Wheeling off road, and thus I guess made the seats extra tuff and hard to take a lot of pounding.

BUTT they are TOO harsh on…well our Butts.

My first plan was to just swap them for a pair of gray cloth seats out of a 03 Crown Vic P71 Ex-Cop car, as I have driven both and the Vics seats are very much softer that the Explorer.

But the seats are very nice looking, and match the rest of the trucks seats.

SO is there a way to get softer seat foam to replace the hard foam in them now??

If you're up for a little DIY , can get foam from Walmart, Michael's or other craft store...Get a set of aftermarket seat covers and insert foam under them, cut foam to fit and attach it to the reverse side of the seat covers with spray adhesive or a running stitch.

I was thinking of lifting up the current seat covers and just replacing the factory foam.

Sure, if you can get it off and on again. Might be a two person job if you don't have upholstery experience, one person to compress the foam while the other does some stitching. I'd imagine your factory foam is just worn out after 20 years, as it wasn't meant to be especially hard.

My seat is firm, but that's after all these years. I have replacement foam, which I'll swap in when I get the seat itself re-leathered.

I think it is just the seat covers, I am guessing it is leather...I had a set of Towncar seats in my old 2000 Mercury Crown Vic.

They were a lot like these, hard, slippy, and HOT in the summer.

When I lost the engine in it I bought a 03 Crown Vic P71 Ex-cop car.

When I first sat in it with its gray weave cloth seats I KNEW at that moment the Towncar seats were history.

This was totally proved when I took a night time dun to test my super bright LED head lights in the 02 Explorer (They work great) and after I had a mild sore fanny..

Then I took the 03 P71 over the same rood trip, I got in with a sore fanny, and when I got back I felt better.

So my plan is to put a set of these P71 front seats into my 03 Ford Explorer, they will loosely match up my Explorer interior is dark gray, these are a lighter gray with the seating area even lighter gray.

Close enough.

Rich

Note the Vic seats are slightly larger as well.
