SOHC Acceleration

From the dyno chart attached, you can see my power doesn't really peak, it's flat to redline. This isn't my best dyno run, but you get the idea.

I get a constant 11.4 MPG every tank. Everyone elses looks good compared to mine.

1995ExplorerXLT

I don;t let my X accel over 3,000 unless I am merging or if I really need to get out of the way of a semi. I get average if 18-20 MPG depending on driving. Thats with a 3.73 axle. also you guys that tell miles per tank..remember the 2 door has a 17 gallon tank and the 4 door has a 21. I get around 375-425 per tank. Thats running it like 30 miles after the light comes on, then filling it about 1-2 gallons after it clicks off. My best tank was 448 miles.

Mine shifts at 4,600 at wot, its an auto. For those of you who has auto and ohv. How did you get yours to shift higher? mine tops out at 45 mph before going into 2nd gear. It would be cool to make it go all the way up to 60 in first gear. Kill those cars like my mom's subaru that shifts three times before attaining 60 :D

The newer model OHV's seem to rev higher. Mine tops out around 5100 or so.

Oh great.. I hope my friend with his 96' ohv dosent get a chip. He'll kill me in acceleration. But he won't be driving anytime soon. Got his license taken away for driving after 9:00 and going 95 mph :nono:

Jason, question, i have punched my car 3 times to the floor, and i could only get the rpms up to 4250 or so, whats up with tat?

Hmm I dunno. Maybe it has something to do with gearing?

How long has it been since you've had a tune-up?

probably because you dont have the superchip yet. Itll get your rpm up there.

I have changed the oil recently and added new plugs an wires. i have amsoil waiting to go in, and i dont have a superchip, but am getting one soon.

Do you mean it shifts at 4250RPM or it only revs to 4250RPM? Even w/ my stick, I'm sure I could rev it that high, but with the exceptionally mild cam makes it really doesn't want to; its kinda like riding an goat in a horse race... With a miracle of science that goat might get up to speed, but it sure as hell doesn't WANT to go that fast. My Explorer goes kicking and screaming into the higher RPM's compared to my past and present more-performance-oriented cars.

No, that dyno run was right after I got the s/c installed. It wasn't even fully tuned.

Mine shifts higher due to a number of reasons: BBK computer, BM shiftplus, overboost pressure, and headers. I find the easier an engine can breathe, the higher it will shift, even with preprogrammed shift points. It's just the engine can rev a little more before the shifter kicks in.

Yours will go higher...mine does...you just gotta press hard with the toe of your shoe. if that doesn't work maybe yours needs the "zip-tie" mod. I've had mine to 4,800 or so at WOT. mine redlines at 5,250 though. the 96 and newer didn;t have a redline on the gauge

Yep you probably need to fix your gas pedal. Originally, mine was not going all the way to the floor.

Geez, my '01 4.0 SOHC shifts at almost 6000rpm at wot!! Under daily driving under moderate acceleration it regularly hits 4500 rpm before shifting. The power curve seems strongest from about 3000rpm to 5700rpm. The motor is stock (K&N drop in filter), no chip with a stock 55R55E tranny.

Now, my old 4.0 OHV with a 5 speed stick got crabby if It went about about 4200 rpm. MUCH lower power band.

Would having the windows open when I drive cause a large enough drag that it would decrease my mileage?

Yeah unless you have those vent things on the windows and you only open the windows a little

I have major lead foot syndrome. HeHe. Its not common for me to kick it up to about 5500 rpm off the line. I love my SOHC. Hehe.

Well I found the culprit of my bad mileage. This last tank I drove around with the windows up and used the A/C or the Vent and got 15.9 mpg :bounce:
