anything is possible with enough time and money, but with the way current gas prices are going up, i woudl stick with the SOHC because it's more fuel efficient if a few upgrades are done and it puts out a littel bit more power. also more reliable from what i hear. read Aldive's Quest for 30 thread, he has a SOHC engine I believe.

I'm wanting to put the SOHC in place of my OHV, but I don't have all the parts and time to do it. Stick with the SOHC, lots more that it's capable of.

Why would you want to swapt to an OHV?

I have an OHV and want the SOHC, but won't do it until I need to.

Probably v8 if I do that.

The transmissions should be interchangeable, the two motors have the same bolt patterns. You can also swap out the SOHC for and OHV, you will have to do some wiring and replace the computer though.

Oh, and just for clarification, I've always kind of thought the OHV to be more reliable. So many people have pushed over 300k on these things, that has to say something.

Mine is gonna hit 300k this summer, without a hickup. No major cost incurred yet. Just want to be prepared.

Why would you do such a thing?

Personal preference I would stick with the SOHC, I plan to do that swap this summer to my 95 hopefully. But yeah the sohc and ohv engine block is the same so tranny's would interchange.

When you guys say 215K are you talking about miles or Kilometres?

Cause 216000 km = 134216 Miles

I have around 216,500 kilometres on my truck OHV v6 4.0L.

We're talking about 215k Miles. :)

We're talking about 215k Miles. :)

Well don't use the "K" after the number as that means Kilometres, please just state it as Miles... :)

Thks as it confuses people.. :D

Remember us Canadians use Kilometres and the Americans you guys.. :) ... use Miles.

And 216000 miles = 347618 kilometres

Us americans use K as in a thousand but I'll try to remember for you Canadians ;)

Thks for the info as i never knew you guys use "K" for a thousand... ;)

Oh i forgot to add ... that means my 15 year old motor should be good for another 15 years by my calculations determined by mileage and kilometeres you guys get and from what i have now... :)

ok i'm an idiot when it comes to abbreviations so here's my quyestion...i know sohc stands for single overhead cam but what does ohv stand for?

Overhead Valve Engine = OHV

Also there is DOHC which stands for "dual over head cam" which there is a 4.0L DOHC made.

Hey guys ,, well the reason is my sohc engine decided to put 2 valves down thru the pistons and i can not find another engine !!!!!,,, 1/2 the people dont even know about the sohc engine ,,,,, I can't even fine a HEAD so i could replace the pistons and fix it ,,,,, but i can get 3 - 4 OHV engine cheap ,,, and was just gonna put that in my 98 explorer ,,,,

I don't know about the same bolt pattern but I do know that the SOHC's come with an upgraded transmission. With that said, they may not be interchangable.

Yes they're interchangeable, because after the SOHC engine was introduced the Explorer came with the 5spd whether it was an OHV or a SOHC engine.

If you use same model year parts you can easily swap any of it. FYI, both 4.0's have the same blocks, pistons, cranks, and rods. The SOHC isn't more reliable with original stock valvetrain parts. Those need to be serviced much more often than an OHV 4.0 engine. If you spend the money and time to keep up with the SOHC, it should last as long as an OHV V6. Good luck,
