Solved rock vs glass

You will be surprised if you call safelight for an estimate. Pleasantly.
I believe they did a windshield for me, and it was in the $250 range, but this was some years ago.

safelite is expensive around here, it pays to call around, I like to get the glass shops competing with pricing over the phone, find the best deal
Sometimes we try to do 3-4 cars at a time, get a discount

Surely Don has Comprehensive: fire, theft, vandalism ad acts of God and Mother nature, On his baby. I have Comp on my wife's truck because she drives to work through deer and elk country.
ADDED: below is a link to a company that will sell a new windshield for $350- including install. Ibet Safelight is twice that because of their National advertising expense. New Explorer Windshield
Many insurance companies glass is a completely separate policy.

@donalds What cost $375- ?
New glass installed
I have had good success with the repair/patch kits
Just like anything else it is all about the prep work
First you need to clean it out, dig all the rock and dust out of the cracks, I use a fine pick for this, I have seen a small dremmel work well too
then you need to clean, compressed air for this
Then prep the surface, again clean the area
Now time to press in the resin and let it setup

50 cent piece it about as large if a crack as you can repair
It may not be perfectly clear and it may not hold forever but the kits are like $20 each it is worth a shot IMO
Had it filled today have a appointment 9am tomorrow
For new glass

Solved!

You don’t have glass coverage on your insurance? Mines only $50 for glass
Apparently it is separate from our insurance and it's not covered but it is now

glad to hear its fixed!

A local shop replaced my '98 windshield for a little under $250. Safelite wanted a little over $250. I might've gotten a little price break by driving it to them vs them coming to me which was what the website estimate included, IIRC. This was using one of the major glass brands instead of a generic, I don't recall the details any longer.

I'm taking it to a mom and pop shop $315+ tax
Safelite $375+tax
Safelite is next door ....to take their business ...

I'm not after the cheaper cost I just like to support my local shops
Old man and his son wife at the desk :)

Good stuff, donalds

Always best to help the little guy.

I teach glass repair and this is a not repairable due to size, combination damage and location IMO. Location is a legal thing but a functional one too. Repaired areas can have a prismatic effect causing distorted visions when sunlight or headlights pass through the repair. This is why “line of sight” repairs are not recommended and Illegal to sell professionally. As far as damage, it’s large and there’s a lot going on here. Looks like two “bulls-eye” damage, combined with BIG “star” damage and a lot of “extensions” aka “legs”. Also in the 9 O’clock area of the center, the glass looks crushed and has possibly broken the inside layer of glass. If this occurred, it’s an automatic replacement. It would take a lot $ of resin to fill and the crushed looking area would become a “blob” IMO. Just my opinion based on what I can tell from the photo.

By the time the discussion stretches and or continued use of the vehicle, lines of the spider web will expand beyond repair. Most US insurance will pay for the fix. It’s a safety concern that shouldn’t consider cost really.

I had the glass replaced this morning
Best thing about all this is
No rust in there :) not even a little just a bit dusty ok a lot of dust
But no rust makes me so happy
That dusty white paint never looked so good lol

Good call. Well done.

Def the right move to replace it. Had a large horizontal crack on the Taurus when purchased. Local shop did it for about 225. NOW my Ex has 3 little BB sized chips that don't concern me, but the whole thing isn't as clear as I'd like, not quite like sandstorm damage, but almost seems like it could use smoothing out, hard to describe. Don't know if there is a super cleaning treatment or some other coating that would help.

^ I don't know which products work best and/or more cost efffective, but here are some out there. Example:
Amazon product ASIN B07CSYZBNN
You do not need to put their sealant on afterwards, would just end up like bare/new glass if there isn't damage too deep, like if there really was significant sand etching instead of surface contamination like I get on mine because I'm right in the path of an airport runway. In my case, something with a petroleum solvent in it helps to get the jet fuel residue off with less buffing.

If you have some plastic polish, for example something some people use in automotive to buff out their polycarb headlight lenses, that might work too. Another possible option is a polishing sealant like Nufinish, but with Nufinish in particular you have to be careful not to get it on trim or it leaves a crusty white residue. If after buffing it on, removal leaves a hazy film, strip that off with hot water and strong detergent solution, same as you'd do if stripping it off the paint.

Another option is just a blue scotch brite pad (do not use green or brown, these can scratch glass) like you'd get for dishwashing, strong detergent solution, and a lot of elbow grease. Depends on what it is, whether detergent will cut through it or if it needs a true polish.

When my '98 windshield was replaced, I think the damage started out as a tiny little chip, right behind the rearview mirror so I didn't see it, then a crack grew all at once on a hot June day. I suspect this because I hadn't even been out driving it recently, behind anything that would throw up a rock to do that. Looked fine one day, then come out a day or two later and see a big crack.

Kudos on always fixing it right. I’m trying to currently do the same. I got stuck driving the Mounty full time while the Kia is waiting at the body shop. I’m trying to change and flush everything. The brake fluid……..yikes. I always gripe while I’m doing it and buying the parts, but the peace of mind is great knowing I could pull the Mounty out of the mothballs and drive it on a 1,000 mile trip if the need arises.
