some wheel and strut help please

Im trying to find a set of 16" wheels for my 05, and I am having a really hard time getting anyone at a tire place or salvage yard to help, unless they are brand new :/ As soon as I say "explorer" they say sorry, we have nothing and hang up

Ive done a few searches but I am not sure I am using the right terms, so I was hoping you guys could help me out.

If I find a 16" wheel, thats a 5 on 4.5, it should work, yes? Is there any other vehicle I could mention, that would work?

And while we are at it, I just want to double check that I could put a 265 70 tire without rubbing? Its not lifted yet but will be by the summer, but I need tires now. Trying to decide between spacers and the quick lifts, and I think I'm going with spacers, but then I need new struts anyhow, so not sure if there is a different size I should get if I put spacers?

The lack of help I receive when I say explorer is really frustrating and I am not sure being a girl is helping, because the guys I talk to just blow me off :thumbdwn:

I know you get a ton of these threads too, so I appreciate any help! Even if there is a thread you know of that you could point me to.

I kinda think some or all jeeps are 5 on 4.5, don't take my word for it. If they are probably wouldn't be able to go with factory wheel though unless center hole on wheel was same as explorer, seems like hub bore is 70.5 mm I think. Someone else could chime in. You can run 265/75/16 or 265/70/16 on stock wheels without rubbing. I've done both as have many others on here. I'm running 265/70/16 now with aftermarket wheels. Only reason I didn't put 75's back on was I wasn't sure they'd fit because of different offset on wheels. That will go on next time. I'd go with quick lifts and you can put those sizes mentioned on there without a lift

Just tell the tire shops it is a mountianeer, you will get exact accurate info without the stigma of the explorer name

IIRC I ran 285/70r16 back when my explorer was bone stock, but i could be totally wrong. I sold all my "small" tires when i put my 33's on but i think i still have a spare at the side of my house, ill check in a bit.

Ask for mustang wheels. same bolt pattern, less offset, and same hub bore diameter, perfect fit

Thanks guys! I will go with saying its a mountaineer or mustang. As it is, finding a tire place willing to put 265's on it is proving to be difficult. They all say they will mount them on whatever wheels I bring in, but not on my truck :/ Off to call the junk yards again and see if I can get a different result

I've ran a couple sets of rims/oversized tire combos and was only able to find 1 shop that would mount them and slap them back on the explorer. Start with mom and pop tire shops and if they won't do it, try sears automotive. They took 275/45r20s off and mounted 275/60r20s back on the truck, and they mounted a 315/70r17 on too narrow of a rim for me also, but i had to bring those in off the truck

Yeaaaa, I was way off. They were 255/70r16.... whops.

Give your local co-op a visit. The will mount anything that fits on your rim and put it back on your truck. Also I know that jeep wheels are the same bolt pattern and hub size. But the rims won't sit flat to the rotor hat without running spacers the clear the brake calipers.

I tried a local place today and the guy argued with me that a 265 will not fit without a lift. Even when I said that I know people with them on, he refused to listen lol And should I just go with the 265 70 or will a 265 75 fit with these 16s? I miss the tire place we used to use, because they would have just grabbed one and mounted it to see how it fit, not looked at the computer and said oh sorry..

And I had thought about getting the BFG's I want mounted, direct from 4wheelparts.com but, I have the TPMS on mine. And Im not sure just buying new sensors will be as easy as it sounds. Is there a way to shut it off? Or will I just have to pay to have the sensors pulled from my current wheels and put on my new ones? Or get new ones and pay to have them reset so they are recognized?

No, you can't disable TPMS. New sensors are easy. Go to Rockauto.com and you can get aftermarket replacement sensors for a good price. Or you can reuse your old ones.

Programming them is also easy, you don't need to pay someone to do it. All you need is a large magnet (like off the back of a speaker, or a strong bar magnet) and that's it. There's a procedure on putting the vehicle into "sensor training mode" on the forum, do a search for it.

You could buy a set of warrior shackles for about 80 bucks and twist the Tbars a bit to get you high enough to clear the 265's easy.

They shouldn't give you a hard time after that. Or find a good off road shop that will mount the tires for you.

I ended up ordering them from 4wheelparts.com. Will come mounted and balanced with new sensors I cannot wait! Thanks for all your help guys!
