My spare tire winch seems to have a slipped cable or something; it doesn't move freely in either direction and doesn't really want to go up or down. I took it out but can't see an easy way of disassembling it without drilling out the rivets. I'd be just as happy to buy a working used one.

Is there a trick to getting it apart or making it work again without doing so? Alternately, what other vehicles use the same winch? Scrapyards around here all say they've got no winches that fit but I don't think I believe them.

Spray lots of lube in there and wait a day or two and see what happens. Mine did the same but after two days of soaking it's fine now.

glad you got yours faster than mine. after going through a trail i noticed mine in the rear view mirror. stupid cable snapped

I wouldn't trust a used one....might be just as rusty and snap when you're flying down the freeway. Pony up the 40 bucks or so for a new one. I got one from a Ford dealer.

I would drill the rivets out myself..... I love going into things like that and trying fix them

I went to junk yard and got one that was cleaner than all get out for $3. Depending on how much work you wanna do is upto you. It was a pain in the ass to split my old one apart.

Wish I could have got mine for 40 bucks. The local dealer here wanted 100 and I laughed at them. They let me purchase it for 70 bucks. Didn't have time to go to a yard to look for one.

roof mount or something different. I know too many people that have had their tires get stuck underneath and couldn't get them in need or flat out lost them

Thanks all for the help.

i had mine snap when it started to do that, moved the rim slightly with it attached and the cable snapped, causing the old rim fall and hit me

Wish I had seen this before just now. I took the old one out of my truck when I put the tire on the back bumper and still have it under my work bench. Its a California Explorer so no rust problems. I think the only time I used it was when I was taking it out.

P.B. blaster works wonders. another thing is if you happen to have a 5 gallon bucket of used oil in the corner of you're work area it does not hurt to drop some parts into it walk away and come back to them a few days later. :)

Old thread, I know, but I did find it by searching ;). I drilled the rivets out of my(second) locked-up spare tire carrier thinking it was bound up from being dry or rusty. I was a little surprised that it was packed with grease and not a hint of corrosion anywhere. It was used over 10 years ago when I replaced the first! Okay, so how did it get screwed up? Well, the cable got smashed and kinked in the take up pulley and broke a plastic guide inside.

Has anyone found a replacement at rockauto.com or fastpartsnetwork.com? I looked at both and couldn't find a listing for it. I haven't tried the stealership yet, but that's next.

couple pieces of metal across the roof rack guides left to right not front to back a couple rachet straps and bam a new tire rack on your roof. and if you want a cable and lock to keep it from being stolen. plus here in washington it stays clean that way
