I`ve heard about the winder for the spare braking loose, or more to the point, the wire snapping.
Any one have this happen?

Mine Did

Mine did break, there was a big bump, clunk noise. At first I taught it was a wheel comming from the bridge over me, then my girlfriend told me it was ours. I stoped to pick it up. As usual, the recalls from Ford always come after I do the repair, it cost me $25 CDN, but if the wire would have hold on, it would have been free......

gang thats weird! hope mine stays on!

Mine did to I just got a recall on it a couple months ago . It was supposed to be for all of Canada.

hmmmm. $25 CDN isnt bad.... one of my coworkers broke one of those on a van and it was a $400 repair bill....... isnt $25 CDN like $15 USD?

$25

That $25 is just for the part, there is no labour in this. Mine had like 4 bolts to undo, and put back the new unit.

Which year model was this corrected? Should I expect this on my 1996?!

Yeah, I get a lot of moisture here. I`m going to call Ford about that recall on monday. I`m tinkering tonight so I think I will pull the spare and grease the wire just in case Ford stonewalls me.

The recall for the winder was only for the eastern provinces of Canada.

For those of us in the west coast
We just have to hope they don`t break on us, and enjoy the mild weather on this side of the country, or the good side, as we call it.:D

What I like more than the interesting workout of releasing the spare from under the car, is the fact that that neat contraption the lowers the tire never works, and even if it does, the jack that was supplied with the car isn't strong enough to lift the car. A bunch of engineers were paid thousands of dollars to come up with the most complicated form of tire changing, and if there is an award in that catagory FORD wins overall in all catagories. I have had flat tires, and couldn't even change a tire because the 2 rods and the wrench did not fit together, nor did the whole concept work. This whole concept is foreign to me and I just don't see how any of this set up is practical. What do you think?

I believe the recall was just for 1st generation Xs also, but I may be wrong on that.

Good thing is was only a $25 fix BE. Imagine if that thing had fallen off and one of these fiberglass bumper cars had run into that tire. I got scared as soon as I heard about the recall. I can see a spare falling off and causing a 30 car pile-up on some major interstate and killing a few people.

That would do wonders for Explorer's already slightly tarnished reputation!

Just STS,

Robb

Just buy a highlift and a real lug wrench. You'll be good to go.

A high lift is great if your rear tire is flat, but what about the front? Most people still have plastic trim there, and the front bumper isn't as strong as the rear:(

What kind of jack they give you? Mine would lift two cars, I`m just getting short on places to jack from.

LOL, everyone who has a hi-lift just says "just get a high lift, man."
I want one, but not yet, kinda useless with my stock, remounted bumpers.

This wasn't on my Ex. but my dad's 87 Dakota had that happen to it. My uncle (po) said he came out of work and saw the spare laying under the truck.

My bottle jack has picked up my friends 74 Caprice wagon and it's no lightweight at 5100lbs for a 6 passenger station wagon!

LOL my old Chevelle came stock with a high-lift, except they called it a bumper jack! although those style jacks are scary to use on the side of a busy road, makes you wonder if the thing is going to stay there or nor with all the swaying

Johnson and flick broke mine by winding it up too far. I like the setup overall tho. i just bought one from a truck being parted out on here. Can't use it tho cause I'm missing the hook thing that goes on the end of the rods. Oh well, whats a few more months without a spare. :D

got a tire repaired at sears, and when they took off the tire to fix it, they tightened the spare holder up all the way, and now it won't come down more than half the way, so it takes 2 people to get a the spare down/up now... grrrrrr.....
anyone know where to purchase these things from... the dealer my only choice?

I would monkey with it first, it just might have winded wrong and something could be getting caught. If you can free it up and spool it all out it might work for you again.(?)

Otherwise dealer or wrecker.
