Any opinion on which plug wires to use? Motorcraft are on the higher cost side but from what I read are considered mid-range in performance. Don't trust the wires you find at Kragen or Autozone - they look like cheap china knock-offs. Also don't want to spend more that $50 on a set. I have been able to find Motorcraft for about 50 from rockauto, even amazon of all places.

What is suggested manufacturer and any improvement in performance?

Also at what interval is it advisable to change these out to a new set? I have about 83K on my explorer.

Thanks:D

The Napa "Mileage PLUS" is a good one. i got them for mine and since doing so, my X starts up really fast! Its never started so fast before. I'm happy with them and they were right around $50

Motorcrafts. They were good for the first 100k, have been good for the next 70k, and I'm confident they'll last the third 100k (if the truck lasts that long LOL!!)

270K Miles on a set of wires? Man oh man I would want to see those suckers under the cover of night, I bet they are arcing!

in my experience wires last about 80K or two sets of plugs LOL yes I am a bit nuts when it comes to my trucks

I used to swear by Taylor wires, now not so much... my last set 4 of the boots pulled right off the wire, and the plastic retainer clips at the coil, half of them broke and I am CAREFUL

Right now I am running Cragen Borg Warner premuim = Cragen is 1 mile from my house LOL, they work but I too will be looking for a new brand of performance wires. I have heard Magnacore are good?

I've got the Borg Warners as well, decent wires, OEM specs. High end Magnacores are supposed to be really nice wires. I've done no upgrading to the ignition system, so stock works fine for me.

I use Magnecors on my XJ-S and they are fantastic.

Sorry.... I wasn't clear.... I did the first plug and wire change at 100k. I plan to do the second plug and wire change later this year (after I rack up another 29,000 miles). That will make the third set of wires (installed every 100k)

Make more sense? (and for the record, I sure as heck wouldn't go 270k on a single set of wires.... Although with 170k, I am on the original hoses, and the belt's got 120k on it.... Both on borrowed time, I'm sure!)

LOL much better! Coolant hoses and belts last alot longer then they used to these days thats for sure!!

Surprisingly Amazon has a good selection of Motorcraft parts. Wire set $47 delivered. Good deal compared to the Ford dealer @ 97.00.

BTW I know the resistance of the wires (at least in my case) about 5 K-ohms per foot. My old wires are about that but he new wires are less. I imagine because they are new and with break-in their resistance will increase to about his range. Does this sound right or should they be at the 5K-ohm per foot level from the get go?

where does one find the right part # for motorcraft wires?

Expore express has JBA wires 4 about 80 bucks. I don't know anyone who has them but I'll be buying them shortlly when i replace my plugs. They're a great site with super cust svc and specialize in our vehicles.

anyone use the accel Custom Fit Extreme 9000 part #a 359032,i just ordered them, was going to go with the Magnecors but i have headers and had to notch them to even get the plugs in and the Magnecors boots didnt look like they would fit and i have the accel coil so i figured why not keep the same

I second the Magnecor Wires, best built wires and very good price.

I did not need an 8.5mm or even 10mm wire on my somewhat stock Ex, so I opted for a set of Magnecor Electrosport 80 blue wires for $59. I have put 100k mi on them since I installed them and changed plugs three times and they still perform and look brand new. I doubt they can be beat for the money. So much better made than the cheapo Motorcrafts I was charged $114 by the dealership.

You should check out the Magnecor website for general info on spark plug wires.

Also Livewires are supposed to be very good, the company that makes the Screamin Deamon coil recommends them and I have heard good things though I have not tried them. They cost $99 and you have your choice of 4 colors.

Here's a link to the wires for the 4.0 V6 Sohc engine: http://worksconcepts.com/magnecor/magnecor_electrosports_80_8mm_plug_wires/6091/i-62253.aspx

Accel cannot compare to Magnecor, like Al says they fit perfectly on the Sohc V6, I have changed plugs three times with them and they still work perfectly. Amazing quality, still are soft and supple and look brand new after 80k mi.

I changed plugs once with the old Motorcraft wires and them filament broke inside one of the wires when I pulled the boot.
