stock motorcraft is what I have found works best. Autolite or champion in a distant second. Stay away from bosch plugs. The motorcraft wires are good too.

Definitely go with the Motorcraft. All of the splitfire and +4 style plugs are marketing gimmicks, not performance enhancers...

Thanks for the quick responses. Sounds like motercraft is the way to go. No any good places to buy from with good deals?

Why stay away from bosch?

i always thought all that stuff was bs. i guess i was right. it doesent seem to me that ford would put low quality parts on an explorer. i have almost 180,000 miles and never change the wires. i have changed the plugs though, and even though the plugs were very warn i noticed no power gain. it did improve idle and cold starts.

Why stay away from bosch?

I tried bosch double platinums and I had a rough idle and a miss under accelation, threw my 80,000 champions back in and it was almost normal, put some new motorcrafts in and I had a smooth idle with no missing.

Ahh Crap, I just bought Bosch Platnum Plus Plugs. Guess it's time to make a quick return to Advanced Auto.

Good thing I caught this thread... I was about to go buy some Bosch plugs and wires... looks like Motorcraft it is...

Has anyone used the MSD or Accel (?) wires? Better, worse, no difference than the Motorcraft?

For a stock truck, there really won't be a noticeable difference. The only reason people notice a difference is because they are going from a set of old wires to new wires.

Yea I never changed mine and I don't know if its been done. It idles a little rough so hopefully this will take care of that. Thanks for the help

i just changed mine for the first time and it has 178000 miles on it. they were WARN OUT!

I am hoping to get ahold of a high performance coil if I can track one down... I have a line at the dealership, so I can get things essentially at cost... does anyone know if Ford Racing makes a high performance coil for the 4.0 OHV, or if there is an aftermarket one I can get? Or, can I use one for a 4.0 SOHC and just make sure the wires are routed properly to the cylinders? And, assuming I run a performance coil, are the Motorcraft wires still recommended, or is there something better than can be used?

IIRC, the stock Ford ignition system is pretty good and not worth upgrading unless you're really building up a high end motor. You'll be spending a lot of money for very little gain.

Gotcha... that I can handle, as I'm not building a high end motor... or, at least not yet.

Looks like Motorcraft it is...

I used bosch plus 4 part number 4459 (not the stock plug have to ask for that number) they are hotter than the stock plug and i like them because i got better throttle response and better mileage on the freeway and with the chip it worked well. I used taylor wires and liked them a lot

My pop ran the plus4's in his van... the thing is a beast, but it seemed to like them for the most part... however, they're over twice the amount of the normal Bosch plugs... or, at least they are up here... it's something like $17 for a pack of two vs $8 for a pair. It's not a huge difference as it's only $30 for the entire truck, but that $30 can be put into gas or new wires or whatnot...

Then again, just my opinion... anyone else have anything good to say about the Bosch Plus 4's?
