My '92 Explorer with the A4LD is currently running 31x10.5 tires and has just had the diff ratios changed from 3.73 to 4.56.

Anyone know how many teeth I need on my replacement speedo gear to get back to normal? Right now I'm going 70 and indicating 80. I know I need more teeth on the driven gear but do not know how many.

Ford parts guy said he doesn't have a chart even though their manual talks about a "Truck Master Parts Catalog" that's supposed to have this info.

Thanks for speedy reply as I'd like to get this done ASAP.

Bob,
If your 92 is like mine, I can't get mine fixed without getting a ratio adapter. They can't fit any bigger gear as the driven gear (the one on the end of the speedo cable). A ratio adapter costs at least $100. They need to replace the end of your normal speedo cable, make the adapter and make a short cable from the transfer case to the adapter. I don't know how much it really costs since I get mine for free but I can ask him how much it will cost if he just modifies new cables. Pull your speedo cable out of the xfer case and count how many teeth you have on it. Let me know how many teeth you have in your driven gear and I'll ask them if there is bigger one you can use.

You will need to get a gear with two more teeth on it than the one that is in your truck. They are very cheep ($5 or $6)and easy to change. On the main page of this web site go to the tech articels and look at the one labled speedo calibration and that will help. Your Ford dealer will have them in stock thay have used the same gear on most Fords for years. Buy one with one tooth and one with two teeth and try each. total time to change less than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the input. Here's what happened before I got to your replies.

Took my gear to Ford (19 tooth, yellow) and the largest gear they had that looked like it would fit was the 20 tooth (black). The 21 tooth had too long of a stem and the geared portion went too far. I installed the 20 tooth and it works but I have yet to see how much I differ from my girlfriend's OEM '97. I'm sure that I will be closer to accurate than 10mph where I am now and if I go to 32" tires this should make things even closer.

Thanks for the help.

Follow this link for info on speedo gear teeth. It is on a Ranger website, but the parts are identical. I have found (at least on my truck) that 4x4 trucks have the gears listed for manual transmission regardless of the actual transmission. With 4wd, the speedo gear goes into the transfer case. The ones listed for auto. trans. are only for 2wd.

Just a quick update. The 20 tooth driven gear only helped slightly. I've only tested it once but it looks like it only got me about 3mph closer to reality (actual 65=observed 72). I'll try the ranger station link in the hope that I can find a toothier gear aftermarket.

Thanks,

Bob

Mulepick,
That's right, you will get 3MPH per tooth added. If you are off by 10MPH, you will need a gear with 3 more teeth.

Hey guys and gals,
I am not trying to beat a dead horse here, but I haven't posted in a while and I wanted to get back into things.
I tried the speedo gear change yesterday and it was by far the easiest thing that I have ever done to the vehicle. I wish putting a lift on was that easy Dead Link Removed
Anyway, anyone who might fear this re-calibration, don't because it is extremely easy.
Keep up the good messages everyone!
