I did not see a direct post about this, some pointed on it but not a direct post. If you are having a squeal on your 5.0 X that sounds like a drive belt/Fan belt squeal or pulley but test did not seem to make the sound go away or the sound changes some but not a ton while driving this might be your problem. If you have the cam position sensor that is basically a distributor with a sensor on top that might be your issue, the sensor is located just under your two coil packs towards center of motor just above the water pump, hence why you will see alot of people have changed the water pump after changing the belt and a few pulleys with no change to the sound because even with a stethoscope it sounds like it could be the water pump. Here is what happens, In the Distributor part of the sensor that runs down into the block with the gear on it has two bushings, one on bottom one on top and over time the top bushing gets dry due to it does not get oiled very well from the engine itself. As long as your engine is running right you do not have to replace the entire thing oil it! To do so all i had to do was unhook both coil packs and unbolt the bracket to lift it out of the way some then there is the plug on the sensor with two 7mm bolts, It should lift straight up with ease and sensor itself is almost weightless. Once you have that removed take your regular engine oil and pour some down in that valley, you will see the part that it reads and where it actually goes down into the engine, and let it soak in, You only need a cap full or two and do not pour it all in at once or it will simply pour out of the bolt holes. Put in a cap full or two (slowly and all over) and let it sit four about a hour, Then dab dry up the excess oil in there, reinstall everything and give it a shot! This worked for me after getting a new belt(needed anyway and found a pulley that was dry none the less) and pulley with the sound remaining afterwards. I hope this helps some one out! Also this was done a 96 X 5.0 AWD with 270k on it. Should be as far as i know a year before and a number of years after 96.
