Hi all, when I start my Ex in the morning it makes a high pitched squealing noise for about a second or two, then runs quiet and fine. It only happens when the car has been sitting for a few hours -- if I stop the engine and immediately restart it, it has no problem. Cold weather makes it more severe.

It has been getting more consistent, in the spring it would only squeal if it had been a cold night and the car had sat for a few days. Now I get it every morning. Could it be the belt? or something more severe?

2000 Explorer Sport, 4.0 OHV, 5-sp manual with 105,000 miles. Thanks

Sounds like it's time to change your fan belt.

it is not the fan belt it will squeal more hot than cold could be a starter hanging up

My '94 does that, it's the idler pulley for the serpentine belt....can't get to it to even spray WD40 or anything on it.....it's called 'my lit'l bird'.....hahaha :)

How do I "check them"? take them off and see if they spin freely?

What should I do to "check the pulleys"?
