steering shaft universal

This is my first post, so bear with me if I do not do this correctly. My 1997 XLT is in need of a replacement universal joint on the steering shaft. My mechanic tells me that it is badly worn and I feel the problem as sloppy steering.
More, we have been told the part is 'obsolete'. Does anyone have a lead as to how to locate this part?

I would hate to lose this vehicle as it only has 150k miles.
