i'm new to explorers. i've also never had a car with an alarm / keyless entry. i push "lock" once to lock the doors, and then when i do it a second time the horn sounds. is this how to enable the alarm?

Yes. One locks the doors but doesn't arm the alarm. Twice arms it.

I am butting in on this thread, so I hope I don't get into trouble. I know how to arm mine (just bought it), but what does it actually do? Does it go off if someone messes with the vehicle and if so how do I shut it off? Can anyone explain it to me? I am like mcG and never had any kind of alarm before.

Thanks,
Brian_B

I'm not sure.. the typical stock system is pretty crappy. A big slam will set it off, that's the only way I know how.

If the doors are opened w/o disarming the alarm, it will go off (i.e - windows open, car locked - unlock by hand and open the door it will go off; or break window, open door, it will go off)

I recently slammed the hood shut while it was locked and it went off, so it does have some sort of "shock" value as well.

Disarm it by pressing the unlock button on the remote OR enter the numeric code into the keypad (if equipped)

I knew the alarm wasn't much, since it just beeped the horn. I just wondered what it actually did. I have been shutting it off with the button, I just didn't know. Mine has the keypad (drivers door), but its been too cold outiside to crawl around in the back to find the code. I know where to look now that somone on here told me.

Thanks again guys,

haha i'm the same way brian, it's too cold to go lookin for the keypad code. i'll do it when it warms up some.

thanks for the quick answer everyone else

The alarm arms when either... 1.the door is locked from the inside while the door is ajar if you lock the door while the door is closed the system will not arm 2. the 7/8-9/0 buttons on the keypad are pressed 3. the remote key fob lock button is pressed. The horn honking after hitting the lock button twice is only to COMFIRM the car is locked and system is armed.
