So Im painting all the trim and bumpers on my xls black and was looking at the original fog lights, i noticed they were a little dirty inside since they have been submerged while off roading, and im wondering if they can be taken apart and cleaned inside? just wondering before I tear at em, possibly breaking them or wasting a lot of time trying.

You could just buy new ones. Probably like 10 bucks for a set. They're a generic square. I have no idea on your '00 what they are. Just a thought. I've never heard of tearing them apart. Sounds like a #### up waiting to happen.

They're round in the 2000 and not too "generic" like pre-1999.

They are likely still just a sylvania circular. Do some investigating. I have a hunch that you could maybe get them from somwhere other than Ford for a pretty penny less.

The lights come as a unit that fit directly into the required space with all the fitting and attachments. You can't simply change the round element. There are aftermarket options out there (including the trendy, but overrated halo option), but they don't have the quality of OEM from what I've seen (i.e. they can leak). People have retrofitted other options into the same space, but the idiot proof way is getting OEM or something specific for our Explorers. Plug and play that way.

problem solved

I found out after taking them off the bumper itself that they come apart very easily. Its only 4 screws and the glass removes from the reflective backing. so i cleaned them both and asembles the whole thing. They look almost new except for the outside of the glass which is scratche a little, but thanks for the suggestions. If i needed i found the whole repelacements online for $30 a piece but mine will work fine for now.

Can you post a link to where you found the replacements for $30?

How many screws hold the fog light housing in place, since I need to replace them on a 2000 Explorer Sport! Does the bumper need to come off, to reach all of the screws ?

There are three small bolts and a wiring harness that unplugs...no need to take off the bumper.
