I would like to find a good place to stow the safety gear I like to keep in the car (blanket, first-aid kit, tow strap, etc.). Unfortunately, the Explorer is the opposite of my last Subaru when it comes to interior storage bins. Aside from the center console/armrest and glove box I don't think there are any storage bins. So- has anyone figured out a good system for keeping stuff out of sight and in place? I figure two shoe-boxes would hold everything except the first aid kit, which is about the same volume as a shoe box except shorter and wider.

I've thought about trying to find something to fit under the third row seats but haven't played with how the seat folding would be affected. Also there is likely space under the front passenger seat.

Thanks for any ideas.

you have that storage compartment in the rear right panel when you open the rear liftgate i believe? maybe shoebox size if i recall... at least for first aid kit?

That depends if you have the Sony stereo system as I believe the Sony system has a subwoofer which occupies that spot.

Also if you have your third row folded down you can put stuff on the floor before setting the seats in the down position and it doesn't stop the chairs for folding down. I have about 5 baseball bats under there all the time along with the handy blanket.

Based on everything you said you needed to store I would assume that space would fit under the seats when they are folded down. That space is very underutilized/dead space in the car.

Since I only use the third row when transporting extra kids, there a tremendous amount of space under the floor behind the 2 row. I keep everything in two bags, so if I use the 3rd row, I grab them and toss them into the way back.

I do have the Sony system and have eyed that space longingly. Same with the space on the other side taken up by the controls for the seats. I hope there is other stuff in that cavity and they didn't lose that as a storage opportunity...

Regarding the space between the rows, our third row is used fairly often so moving bags around won't be convenient. I'll try playing with it some this weekend.

A good place to put it is under the front seats like you would with the inflation kit. Perfect place to put it.

Randy, I think your blanket may fit under the folded 3rd row seats. I just looked at mine and the seats when folded are fairly tight to the floor. There is however, a 6" wide space that would be the width of the back compartment. This is between the folded cushion and rear most section of the well. There is also limited space behind the 2nd row seats and the folded 3rd row. This would be the area where the 3rd row passengers place their feet. When the 3rd row seats are folded, both areas are mostly hidden from view.

Same here. In a pinch I have hidden valuables there that I wanted a smash and grab to at least have to work at (don't do it in the lot where you leave it...).

Take that silly subwoofer out and send it to me :D
