i helped my friend install a 40 series on his j**p and the thing is i think it sounds totally wuss. we started the jeep w/ no muffler on and its sounded so beastly and i was thinking to my self that's what i want the deepest throatest LOUD exhaust i can get out of my v-6. my friends jeep has a 4.2 litre and my explorer has the 4.0 engine so i think that it will sound similar to what his sounded like with the muffler completly off? also i have read some things about losing backpressure and there being problems with this? hopefully someone can help shead some light on this for me.

well

If you want loud..sure you could just take of the exhaust completely..I mean who needs exhaust anyway? :D

Seriously..if you want loud, just get the loudest flowmaster you can...or get cherry bombs and face the resonators towards the rear of the truck...use a big fat 3" pipe and a big megaphone exhaust tip and it'll be plenty loud. You might be surprised that some types of exhaust can actually make your exhaust LOUDER than a straight pipe...I suggest doing some research on different exhaust brands and types to find what youre looking for.

I do NOT suggest a straight muffler-less exhaust on the stock 4.0L being its computer controlled and you might..screw things up a bit. You will probably lose some low-end torque depending on how much backpressure is reduced, but if youre going for noise I'm sure you'll be revving it anyway...

Once youre set in the exhaust department, add a complete KKM intake kit and you can get a bit louder/throatier exhaust too...oh and good spark plugs, wires and quality fuel will affect that tone as well...:)

Just..hope you dont take long trips...a loud exhaust over a few hours is...annoying to say the least.

well i am a student so what can i do on a budget. but what about a dynomax? are they loud if they are loud-i want low end rumble and high end loudness not constant whinnyness like 4bangers with glass packs. also has any body taken and put there exhaust exit out the side of the truck like in front of the rear tires. i think maybe 2.25 piping back to the muffler then dual out to one pipe on either side in front of the rear tires would look absolutly killer! but hey thats me . any thoughts or suggestion?

I think if you left the cats on you will be able to do anything up to a glasspack. Make some measurements and have a muffler shop bend you a piece of pipe. I had a shop bend one for me for $20. Then get a glasspack some are cheap, like less than $20. Throw in some clamps and a trip back to the muffler shop 'cause it wont be right the first time, and you will have a loud exhaust. Dont worry about the wuss sound, four bangers rev alot higher and sound like bumblebees. The way the 4.0 is designed it sounds good and throaty.Mine almost sounds like a v-8 for $62. Good luck!

P.S.- Dont spend any money trying to duplicate the sound of anything else 'cause it will never happen.

I have a couple questions leggo...Will my backpressure be fine with just the cat? and also what is your sound like? is it high end growl and low end rumble or is it like a constant gurgle or what? if you have any pics of your setup id love to see them. Also to save on those trips back to the muff shop i could buy a glasspack and ask them to put it on i suppose or do you think straight pipe sounds better? sorry for all the bother i just dont want to sound like so much of the bad import exhaust type stuff. thanks alot

Mine sounds very throaty. With a very medium to low tone, but its so hard to describe a sound. You can hear it running inside a house when its idleing in the driveway!
I guess if your picturing it to sound like a v-8 with a decent cam at 500 rpm going budump..budump..budump..then no it will not have this sound, it is a constant low sound when idleing.
My setup is nothing special to look at, its pretty much the stock pipe from the axle back. The piece I had made was the one from the muffler to above the axle. And I threw in a $40 dollar turbo muffler from the parts store. Get rid of the resonator.
I imagine with the stock manifold and dual-cat setup there is sufficient backpressure.
I havent heard any straight pipes on the 4.0, so I couldnt tell you what I thought. Some body on this forum has a dual exhaust rear exit with two cherry bombs and he also said it sounded like a v-8.

what does it sound like at high rpms?

i would definitly not go w/o a muffler. sure it may sound louder, but there will be no back pressure, therefore causing a backfire effect. so if u gas it and then let off of the accelerator you will backfire like none other. which is horrible 4 your pipes.(may cause them 2 like blow off or something 2 that effect) u want lound and cheap put 2 cherry bombs on there and have a shop bend u a pipe. it won't sound like a drag car but it should do the trick.

i understand the backfire stuff.but isnt a cherry bomb completly open too? i didnt think it had any resonators in it at all bc my friend had one on his car when he bought and when he took it off you could see thru it

I actually just installed a glass pack on my navajo about 2 hours ago. Wasn't to hard except taking off the oe muffler. I went for a day and a half w/o a muffler, it was very loud. I thought it was pretty cool cause it made some heads turn. I just slipped the glass pack in the mufflers place with a connector on each side to make it fit and let it go. Not as loud as i expected but louder, plus I've heard they get louder as you use them because they burn up inside which gets rid of the muffler effect. oh yeah if you want to go mufflerless like i did for a while it should be ok, no backfiring or computer problems here.

COOL! mind telling me what peices you needed and what length and type of glass pack you used vcmudder? i know that i cant just slap it in there b/c its offset. You say it was louder then expected ehh? sounds good to me.

If you go to a parts store such as Auto Zone for example just tell them your make and model and they get you one that is close to stock fit. The closest they had for mine was about and inch or 2 shorter with 2" inlet and outlet pipes. All you need is conector or adapter to make it fit snuggley inside the existing pipe. I had to weld mine also to make sure it stays on better safe than sorry. The original pipe size is supposedly 2.25". You kinda got to mix and match adapters to get the right fit but its pretty cheap overall. My total cost of half way new exuast is $21.94. Not bad in my low budget book.

so your exhaust pipe is around the outside of the cherry bomb or are your saying you just used like a 2.25 to 2inch conector? does the parts store have this?

i just bought a cherry bomb tonight, im going to try installing it myself tommorrow morning. how hard are they to install? all im doing is swapping out the oem muffler for the cherry bomb. i know i will need clamps but will the original muffler be hard to get off? it is only about a year old and it had clamps, so i dont think it is welded. i like knowing that i can always just put the old one back on if i dont like this one. i like doing stuff myself cause its fun but i also get frustrated easily so if i have too much trouble with it im just going to take it to a shop and let them put it on.

yeah the cherry bomb is inside of a connector which is inside the exhuast pipe. and the parts store has everything you need to do it except the welding part. the only problem i had was cutting the backside pipe off the muffler because i didn't have a torch or an air saw. but other than that it wasn't hard

i just got back from the muffler shop. i decided not to put the cherry bomb on. i went ahead and got a dynomax race magnum muffler and all mandrel bent piping rom behind the muffler. it has a good throaty deep sound and sounds almost like a v8. when cruising in overdrive you cant hardly tell that its there. right now ive disconnected the battery so the computer will reset. it also seems that i have alot more power, i have to be careful around turns because i cant gas it like i used to. between this and my k&n i think ive regained all the power ive lost over the past 300k miles. i am very happy with it.

yea

Go with the glass pack if you like huge flimsy spoilers, 5inch tips on a 1and 3/4" pipe, yellow brake drums and calipers, big ugly racing stripes, tons of stickers, front wheel drive, ugly ground effects, and 120 lb.ft. of torque at 5000rpms.
