I work on an airfield and in construction zones quite often and my explorer is often times with me there. I am looking for some kind of 'hazard' light. I need something that will make it stand out so that it can be seen (Not too concerned with visibility in daylight, as...you should see the explorer) but at night it would be nice. I also cannot really mount them on top as there is often equipment there. I have been told that strobes are both expensive and I could get into legal trouble by just having them (Something about impersonating a police officer?) But I have had many conflicting things told to me. I have been told that anything but amber and white would be illegal, but I see many a truck with a green lamp on top, and tow trucks with red white and blue lights. I am looking for something that I could put in the rear and the front to make it quite noticeable so that I do not get plowed by either a tug or a corolla on the road (Or at least help). I have seen LED's before that were quite impressive, but I have no idea where to look or even a company name. Price, also, is on my mind, as this is my personal vehicle, work will not be helping pay for this.

Thank you!

As far as the Airport, you can have really whatever you want, as long as you comply with FARs. AS for the road it is illegal to have any other color other then white and amber on the front of the vehicle.

I have blue wig-wags, and white strobes for the airport, but I cant use them on the road.
Also its a good idea to have lights on the highest point of the vehicle to avoid wing strikes.

Are the strobes as expensive as I've been lead to believe? A friend told me I needed something akin to a head unit that was about $1600, which sort of scared me away from the strobe idea.

Your not putting aircraft strobes in your vehicle, if thats the case then yes they would be that expensive. But automotive strobe LEDs are about $20-$500.

Strobes inside of the Headlight housings would look pretty sweet... thats the way I usually see them and notice them quickly

P51's right about the FAR's. As far as what's illegal on the road depends upon what state you're in. In PA, anyone not involved with an emergency service is only allowed to display yellow/amber lights. Although most places that sell lighting do not require any kind of identification other than for billing purposes, so you could have any color you want as long as you're not driving down the road with them on.

you can do this......

but use blinking leds and have them wired to a switch, or go to shucks/napa and get the cheapy stobes for like 20 bucks and drill them into one light housings
I was reading through that thread before, but I was afraid they would not be bright enough to be noticed easily. Time to go find some LED's on ebay and find out. I had no idea NAPA sold strobes to be honest. I will have to go look.

That thread looks familiar :p:

i'm going to be doing that mod soon, just with amber lights maybe have them blink with the blinker??? also when yuo gonna post pics of how you ran the wires

Haha, you just refreshed my memory. Tomorrow I will.

Those LEDs on top I use to joke around saying that they were brighter then the stock headlights. I can see the light they give off on my antenna going down the road, you cant miss them. I put them on, 1 for looks, and 2 to avoid wing strikes at night.

You wont be able to fit 10mm LEDs into the roof rack if that is what you were talking about, 5mm would be the biggest.

Mini Phantons work great and are super cheap when it comes to LED's, I have one and love it, bright as hell.
